You should get get the new FMJ DVD player, the DV29, which will have HDMI. It will retail at £1600. All the Arcam players can be easily modified to be region free.

Why would you pay £600 more for the DV29 over the DV79 - I mean what are the key differences that I would notice in picture and SQ when watching movies on my Pioneer HDMI equipped plasma or at least what are the differences in terms of spec ?

    Hi Crustyloafer.

Sorry but got to ask. For the extra £500 or £600. How is the picture better? The DV79 is as good as I have seen so far. Are the internals that much better (higher spec)? Is there better resolution or colour depth? Less artifacts?

    Genuinely curious.

    Gerald. :)

The picture is quite a bit crisper on the DV29 compared to the DV79. It also seems to have better colour depth with very good shadow detail.

It also has separate power supplies for the video and audio stages which helps it perform particularly well for cd and DVD-A playaback.

    Thanks Crustyloafer.

Very interesting indeed. I gather the fmj29 also sends out full multi-channel audio down one lead, possibly HDMI. Do they have a matching amplifier that can accept the audio in this format? My HiFi cabinets are looking like spaghetti junction at the moment!!!

    Cheers, Gerald. :)

The DV29 does have the capability to send full bandwidth, uncompressed multi channel audio as well as digitla video down the HDMI cable. There are no AV receivers/processors on the market yet as far as I'm aware that can accept this signal via HDMI but you can bet they will appear soon.
