Hi everyone, as you'll know i have had serious problems with every panasonic pj ive owned and am looking to change to a different model. Whilst I was in leeds this afternoon i thought i'd pop into the sony centre and get their opinion of the hs50 and whether it would be suitable for my use. Went in the store and asked the sales rep if i could speak to someone about the new hs50 pj, he looked at me as if i'd just sprouted an extra head and wandered off to find someone else, after about 5 mins he came back and said that he had never heard of let alone seen a hs50 so would not be able to give me any info, i immediately wandered outside to check the sign on the front of the shop, went back inside to a puzzled look from the sales guy, "just checking to see if this was the sony centre" i said, he didnt seem amused by my antics so i obtained sonys help line number from him and left. what the fudge of all the places to go and ask about a sony product i thought that "the sony center" would be a good starting point. Not a good start for their customer service IMO , will have to go elsewhere for my advise i suppose.

Apparently, the Sony centres are independant franchise shops, similar to Sevenokas IIRC.

Thus, some shops will have different stock to others and an inherent lack of knowledge.

What makes me laugh is when you over hear the sales staff selling a 'progressive scan' DVD deck to people with a standard CRT set, without actually explaining it - totally pointless.

    Classic.

    Cap :)

    Yep.

But then, the same can be said for Dixons, Comet, PC World, Currys et al.

Went to look at MP3 players yesterday. In dixons I was advised that they are 'very good' ha ha ha :)

I think that PJ's while on the increase in the popularity stakes are still very much a specialist area ideally suited to the more dedicated Home Cinema enthusiast out there who generally know where to look for their hi-tech fix. I think that places like the SONY CENTRE probably cater to more mainstream tastes (Plasma, Home Cinema in-a-box….ect) and I doubt that the majority of branches get many members of the general public through their doors enquiring after the very latest SONY LCD PJ (that appears to be in very short supply throughout the UK). Having said that it wouldn’t hurt for the store manager to pay for a subscription to a monthly Home Cinema publication and leave it lying around the coffee room for the staff to flick through.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that MP3 players are indeed very good (it's not all hype), especially the ones that come with a rechargeable battery.

Not quite the same really , the sony centre only sells sony products and as such gives an impression that they are a sony specialist. Most car dealers are franchises, imagine going to your local main dealer to ask about a new model only to be told they have never heard of it. Shabby very very shabby.

Fair comment. However, I think I was really trying to say that there is an
obvious lack of knowledge in these places :suicide:

I suppose that if you wanna good joint of meat you go to the butcher, not the super market and all that :lesson:

Salty, nice one. You should work in Dixons with that techno babble

Yes so true - generally you have to go to a decent independent retailer to speak to someone who actually knows something about what they are selling. The High street chains (including the Sony Centre) occasionally have some decent deals but you need to know what you're after before buying from them. I guess the stores also stock the stuff that sells in reasonable quantities and I guess (as was mentioned above) PJ's aren't mainstream enough yes to warrant stocking in Sony stores.

Regarding a different product - When I originally set up a wired network in my house I knew sod all about them and I foolishly thought that PCWorld would know what I needed to buy to connect a laptop, PS2 and Desktop PC to an NTL internet connection. I couldn't have been more wrong lol. About 5 trips later (to return the incorrect products) I finally had it working. Would have been 6 trips but even at that stage I knew that I didn't need a router with a built in ADSL modem  .

gthom3 i see that you're quite the gaming fan (lol). I got a 6 slot NEO GEO arcade cabinet at my shop and love the retro scrolling space shoot em ups (some of the very best were released on the SATURN).

If I was were you are I'd go to somewhere like Discount electrical where someone like Benji can probably show you the HS50.

I'm guessing they're relatively near to you. It's the distance that makes it kinda impractical for me.

I made a special effort to visit the SEVENOAKS in Birmingham the other week with a lot of cash in my pocket to blow on a complete overhaul of my current modest Home Cinema set-up (which I have now started). I have to say that my experience was dreadful and left a nasty taste in my mouth as upon entering the place I was immediately made to feel very uncomfortable by a particularly smarmy sales assistant who was all the things I detest in a person (both patronising and rude). Fair enough it was about 3pm in the afternoon when I visited on a Sunday but that doesn’t excuse the fact that this person was positively vile in his manner towards me and as a result I walked out with about £4000 still burning a hole in my pocket. I was sharing the details of this unpleasant experience with a friend shortly after (the one who advised me to visit SEVENOAKS) and he assured me that the people at the near by Wolverhampton branch where he goes are lovely.

So I guess that it all depends on which branch of SEVENOAKS you visit as they are a franchise and quality of service and knowledge of staff will differ greatly as obviously there will be no training courses for management or staff, just avoid the Birmingham branch like the plague unless you enjoy feeling less-than-human.

To be honest since rediscovering this forum (actually joined years ago) all of my recent knowledge in the rapidly changing and improving Home Cinema Arena has been acquired here. In the space of a few weeks and simply by making a few posts (but reading a lot more) I’m confident that I’ve already purchased the best TV (SAMSUNG 50” DLP), DVD player (SAMSUNG HD945) and amp (YAMAHA DSPAX750) suited to my budget and needs. In fact I’d just taken the plunge and purchased a PJ (MITSUBISHI HC3) before re-acquainting with the forum and although I’m extremely happy with it (the WOW factor still hasn’t wore off) I now know that there are better models available out there for the same (or less) than I paid for the HC3 as I guess I was seduced slightly by a very charismatic sales man (SEVENOAKS Birmingham take note) and paid a little over the odds. Has to be said though that I’m still very happy with my PJ purchase but just have that little niggling sensation that if I get a demo of a THEMESCENE, PANNY or HITACHI I may very feel otherwise.

As I seem to have hijacked this thread a little and my post is starting to drag on I guess what I’m trying to say is that overall when you are prepared to step back and look at the big picture then this forum can offer you invaluable and impartial advice on which product is best suited for your requirements and more importantly (the point I was originally trying to make) where to purchase it from for the most cost effective price as no one likes being lumbered with that lingering sensation of having paid well over the odds for something (being fleeced I think is another phrase).

Had exactly the same experience at Sevenoaks in Leeds. A snotty stuck up mother ******* who knew nothing at all about Pjs kept saying that, and I quote 'Panasonic 700's are sh*te, we'd never sell them' and 'no I've never seen a Panasonic 700 - but I know they sh*te' and 'we only sell top end systems here' even though they had the Sanyo Z2 in stock! I ended up spending my hard earned cash online to a company who seemed to know their stuff. Staff in Sony centres/Sevenoaks etc. really should to told not to get pi**ed off with customers who ask questions! It seems to me that these staff just want people to walk in like zombies and ask 'what should I buy?' and fork over a few grand to get products which may not meet they requirements. After saying all this though your average zombie in a shop doesn't get paid as skilled labour !

Likewise, avoid the Leeds branch, a bunch of self opinionated, ill informed , miserable ba*****s. Went in to try and demo a few pj's (700 at top of list) was told 700 was total garbage (they didnt stock it) and that the optima they had in was amazing, he put the optima on and me and my mate immediately told him it was rubbish, asked him if he'd seen a 700 running to which he replied "no but all panasonic pj's are crap" then went on to say " as optima only make pj's that makes them better", what a load of s**te, thank goodness forums like this are available so we can sort the facts from the ridiculous things we get told by retailers.

Had a similar experience at the Bristol branch. Was looking around when I casually asked what projectors they were currently stocking/selling/ordering.

The young scamp advised me that they had 'a few' when I spotted the Sim Domino running in the demo room. I asked if I could take a look when he quickly retorted 'you had better not touch it - its all set up' I then asked him why he thought I would touch or indeed move it when he told me that 'this is in line with the screen, if you touch it you will wreck everything....' At this point I told him not to patronise me and not to be so rude pointing out that I actually was aware of PJ technology.

I think that because I had entered sevenoaks in a pair of jeans, cat boots and a polo shirt they assume you dont wanna spend there the Bristol branch is in the 'rich' part of town!!!

This post does not really explain how rude, vile and utterly unprofessional the guy was.

Ho hum, as before, just another franchise!

I reckon Gary Lighfoot and Messiah should open an AV shop. As long as they let me manage it - boy, you would have to keep those two in line..... :)

    Now for some positive points:

It's a shame Progressive AV don't have a shop in the conventional sense as Liam there is a very helpful guy.

Top marks also go to Nexnix. When I demoed TX100 and HS20, they were actually appreciative of the differences between projectors and the fact that both DLPs and LCDs have + and minus points. The best thing was the feeling of not being pushed to go for something.

    Yep,

Progressive AV, Discount TV and Nexnix are streets ahead of most high street retailers. These guys know thier stuff.

I have heard that Liam even lives in a husband and wife relationship with his PJ :)

I'd have asked to see the store manager, and whilst waving a massive wad of notes in front of him, ask if the attitude of the sales staff was typical towards someone willing to spend 4k. I don't expect the red carpet treatment, but I cannot stand this kind of smarmy patronizing git, and I feel it's my duty to let the manager know what kind of person they have representing their store.

Just a quick post to add that my experiences of sevenoaks in Leeds have been just as bad, i went in to look at subs, but they didn't have the ones I wanted to demo in stock (B&W 675, Q500mk2, MJ Ref100) tried to sell me a quake instead (yes very similar he says  ) then they said they would ring me when they got the right ones in stock, I'm still waiting 12 months later. Bought one from Superfi instead, and the guy I dealt with there was great.

It's not all branches though as sevenoaks in Sheffield are really good.

Yes. In my experience the guys in the Sheffield store are exactly how a high(ish)-end AV retailer should be......knowledgeable, helpful, friendly.......

Leeds Sevenoaks was franchised to the brother of the guy who franchised Sony Centre, Leeds, and as far as I am aware it is still so. Maybe that tells us something?
