Front Speaker upgrade - advice appreciated

Hi Guys

Another speaker advice thread I know! I also appreciate that it's to each persons listening tastes too, but bear with me here please :)

I basically am thinking of spending £350ish on a new set of speakers to replace my Gale Moviestar Floorstanders. These have been fantastic for me so far but I have a feeling that they may be approaching the end of their life.

I have the following setup:

Denon AVR-1909
Gale Moviestar Floorstanders
Gale 4050c Centre
Gale 4010S as rears

I don't currently have a sub as the room is 13 x 8 and the bass from the floorstanders is plenty to annoy my neighbours with!

I am considering either:

Mordant Short 916i
Mordant Short 906i
Mordant Short Mezzo 2
Mordant Short 914i
Boston Acoustic VR3

Now I am aware these are mostly one brand so perhaps I need to broaden my horizons a little, but they are from RS which is both convenient and the prices are pretty good. Also I can probably convince them to let me have a listen to them in store.

There is a Sevenoaks near me that I can go into, but I would want to have a couple more choices to give them to listen to as well.

I really want something that can kind of take the place of a sub in that the bass is nice and deep when needed, so I assumed that the 916's would be best with two drivers? The Mezzo 2's look very nice but I'm not sure if they can produce the amount of lows that a floorstander can?

If anyone has speakers I should add to my list, please shout.

Any advice much appreciated

Thanks

Matt

EDIT: Also the Mezzo 1's are £80 cheaper the the 2's, is there much of a difference?

EDIT MK II: Seems I can get a set of ex-demo R270 for £349...worth it?

Thank-you very much :)

I've had a listen to some MS fronts - the 916i's and they sound very nice. I think I am going to pick up a pair of 906i's as they seem basically the same speaker but a fair bit cheaper.

If anyone thinks I'm going wrong, please let me know

I can get a set of ex-demo 908i for £299, is it worth it?

Ive got some 908i speakers..... I paid £250 for the floor standers and a 905I centre from a mate... however the 908s are *more* than worth £300 imho they sound brilliant...

When I got around to ordering, the 908i's were gone. I went for a set of 906i's in the end, though I am still waiting delivery due to the bad weather (and the UKs inability to handle it!).

I'm pretty happy I made the right choice as the 905 and 903i's I have sound awesome. I'll see when the 906i's come though! I like the fact I can add a sub at a later date when I don't have to worry about neighbours!

Thanks for the advice :)

Hi there,
Im looking at the MS 916i and 914i.
What did you think about them in the end?
Im thinking of having 916i at the front and 914i at the back,
Good set up??
Let me know,
Thanks

I have the 906i's at the front (the older versions of the 916i's) and they are fantastic. At first they were a little muddy and sounded stiff, but now they are getting looser they sound great and have some awesome bass.

The 914's at the rear may be a little overpowering imo

I'm getting happier with the 906i's every day, great set of speakers and give quite an open sound actually as time goes on. Really loving them :D
