I'm looking at upgrading my front speakers.
Right now I have a pretty basic pair of Wharfedale MFM7 floorstanders.
Ideally I'd like to replace them with something similar - floorstanders, physically large, full range with a lot of clout but with a better sensitivity. I think the Wharfedales are quite poor - about 88?

They need to work for both music and surround.
My centre is a Mission 77C1 and the surrounds and rears are Mission 77DS and Mission 771e.

So, based on those requirements, can anyone recommend anything? They don't necessarily need to be Missions.

    TIA

Well, I have a pair of 775e's (which, I have to emphasise, I will not be selling) which appear to fit all your requirements.

Truly HUGE in size, definitely what I'd describe as 'Full Range' and with an unusually high sensitivity - 92db/W/m (they're extremely easy to drive in practise).

They're extremely difficult to come across, but it might be worth opening a wtd thread and keeping an eye on E-Bay.

    Thanks Dimmy,

Looking at the spec' they are only 2 way.
Perhaps I should have clarified that I'm looking for 3 way in an attempt to get a clearer sound and more defined mid.
The Mission 783's seem to fit the bill....as do the Pilastro's but they're a bit more than I want to be spending at £20,000....

    No, they're three ways :D.

The 783s - if my experience of the 782s is anything to go buy - will be excellent sounding speakers, but they're far too small for my needs - the tweeters are well below earlevel when I'm sat upright (I'm rather tall and on a slightly high seating position).

The D'Appollo style driver inversion doesn't help proceedings.

Hyperfi have excellent prices on the 783s if you're interested.

Yes, the specs on the Mission site are for the 775s, not the 775e's ( an 'E' which stands for Evolution).

The Original 775s were indeed two ways, but the ones in my bedroom are most definitely three ways :).

    Definitely not :D.

When I think about how much I'd have to spend to better them - well over £1k - and how much I paid for them - £250ish - I'm not going to sell these until I absolutely HAVE to.

In my listening room, and it can't get out...

If it helps, there's a user in the Classifieds forum who's selling his 774s with whom I have first refusal for the purchase, but he's working away in holland at the moment so won't continue with the sale until he returns.

If you're looking for the closest alternative to some 775e's for your listening room, I'll nudge him in your direction if it helps. I was only going to buy them and use one as a replacement for my 77C1, but my festive spirit might be to advise him in your direction on this :).

LMK if you want me to proceed with this.

    Dimmy :)

    OK, thanks Dimmy.

It looks like the 774's are only 2 way though so I'll continue searching for some 775e's for a while...

Failing that I may look at some KEF's.

    Merry Xmas :D

The Mission site has the 774's listed as 2 way so I would be inclined to believe it.
Don't be mislead by the 2 large drivers - they could both be combined bass/mid drivers.

If they're both 'Active' Radiating drivers then I do believe they're considered as two separate drivers.

Despite that being the most awful JPEG in the world, it certainately does look like just a smaller version of my 775e's.

As you said they dont need to be Missions.

Have you thought about Wharfdale Evo 30's Normally £650. I have seen a couple of ex-demo's at 525.

Stebbo, the Evo 30's are exactly what I'm looking at now.
I currently have Wharfedale floorstanders so I would be more than happy to replace them with more Wharfedales.
The problem is there are no dealers near me who stock them so it's going to be difficult to be able to trial a pair either in a shop or at home...:(

Haven't heard them unfortunately, but did see them when I was demoing the Quad 11Ls, and they're very good looking speakers :).

Well for what it's worth, they get 5 gold stars in What Hi-Fi and are this years best buy speaker priced from £501 to £1,500.
Although I don't consider these reviews to be definitive, they certainly won't be a bad speaker.

And as you say Dimmy, they do look nice - especially in maple.

Which is the colour I did see them in.

Although What Hi-Fi have decided they don't like them anymore, and prefer Quad's 12Ls.

    Got any specs on them?

The magazines are upstairs and I can't be bothered to fetch them.

If I remember correctly, they're 6Ohm nominal impedence, 84db/w/m sensitivity standmounts.

They're basically the 11Ls with a larger cabinet volume and bigger bass/midrage cone, but cost a fair bit more.

I'd rather partner the 11Ls with an active sub.

I'm struggling to understand your insistence on floorstanders.

Mine look gorgeous, but so do the Quads.

An obvious 3 way choice at a decent price is the AE Aegis Evo 3. I have them in my music set up and they're great speakers

    Me too...
I guess I'm just a bit old school.
I always believe that you get a better overall sound/presence from full sized floorstanders.
Besides, it saves me forking out on expensive stands...;)
