front and rear surrounds (on my 750se) is it worth it ?

what benefits will i get from hooking up front and rear surrounds? do i need specially encoded discs or dvds ? will i hear any difference in 5.1 dtds/dolby mode etc? basically i would just like to know what the benefits are :D
