Well thanks to finding this forum a year ago I managed to escape a good friends advice for buying a Philips recorder and going down the + route and bought a Sony GX3. Since then Ive transferred about a quarter of my VHS videos to DVD R via the Sony recorder or going down the RW to PC road using TMPGEnc prgrogramme and the excellent guide at http://personalpages.umist.ac.uk/staff/kevin.j.mullarkey/docs/PCtoDVDRGuide.pdf (the Bible ) Ive stuck to HQ HSP and SP modes for archiving VHS and found the GX3 to be a great recorder for this purpose. The only problem Ive had with this machine is it is rather fussy disk dirty etc, and its failure to play 75% of my Warner Bros. Pre recorded DVDs. (Both will always play in my Panasonic DVDS75EBS player) So I want to upgrade to a DVD HDD. I dont want to sound like a DVD Christmas newbie but Im stumped on which to go for???? I know from experience that DVD RW is not ideal, (ive had too many Maxell and TDK RW disk failures) but the present Panasonic range is not an option as I have a good Sony Viao desk top PC so cannot go down the RAM road if I want to continue to edit ,my favorite VHS to DVDs via TMPGE. I Dont want to buy another RAM DVD drive for my PC either. So my options for around £400 are: (and my pros and cons) Sony RDR-HX900 An easy road to take being used to aSony DVD recorder, though lack of editing facilities is a pain as I normally use the PC, maybe the recording quality out weighs this? Pioneer DVR720H- Read a few reports that the RECORDING quality is not as good as the Panasonic or Sony recorders. Also whether it is a mobile phone, micro system, Hi-Fi, walkman, MiniDisk, TV or VHS(except JVC) Ive always bought either Sony or Panasonic as it may sound stupid , but Ive always trussed these two brands. Panasonic DMR-EH50 do I wait for this? Not interested in its DVD + features but from what Ive read on this forum, I get to transfer my RWs via this machine to my VIAO, can edit in the HDD for quick DVD-Rs and record onto DVD-R. With regards DVD RW VR mode, although I transfer to the VIAO via this format at the moment, Ive never edited on the Sony recorder this way as you get a better result via the VIAO and TMPGEn. So could easily use just the RW Video mode on the new Panasonic. With the GX3 still being OK for my non HDD needs I dont mind waiting for the Panasonic. So any advice, am I making the right decision?
