Friday night challenge

Somebody posted a video of the town I grew up in, dated 1984. All looks very familiar to me, but I think it's earlier.. maybe 82 or 83

It's difficult to date it - but there is a shot that passes by the cinema (22m27s) - Trying to work out what the film posters are - which will confirm the date.

It's driving me mad.

Answers on a postcard please.

Struth. Good luck with that!

If the quality was a bit better than dire, you’d have half a chance :D

Dunno but the guy passed at 22m 13s was holding a receipt. I used the image sharpening software from csi Miami on it and from the reflection on his glasses I could see the date on the receipt was 27th sept 1983 at 11:47am

You’re welcome

The one on the left looks like a man pointing a gun with a woman. Maybe a submarine in the background.

The one of the right looks like a close up of a sports car in profile.

Hi @Liquid101, do you still live there, if so we're near neighbours. I still go there a lot through the year and it's changed a lot since I first went there in the 60's and still very recognisable from that video though as said above I wouldn't like to put a date to it.

I am getting a earlier than 84 vibe off this too. The poster on the left looks like it could either be a couple dancing or a guy holding a woman around the waist. The one on the right looks like a boat to me, and the style of text makes me think it is probably a comedy.

No, moved to Wales in 1999. My folks still live there, so visit a few times a year.

OK, well depending on where you live you'd be able to wave to them on a good day and converse via semaphore:laugh:

Not got very far identifying it, but in our house we think the right-hand one is a bow shot of a warship or high-speed launch. Could be an action movie in which boats figure.

Another quick look this morning. The one on the right looks a bit like Close Encounters, which was 1977. Given that’s there’s an Austin Metro in the film which wasn’t released until October 1980, this makes it unlikely.

If I was really desperate to find out, I would google for lists of UK cinema releases for that year and a couple either side, and then go through and check out the posters for any that sound like they might match.

Tried that. Can’t find anything.

I think the shops are enough to the date it. One of them closed in 1982, and there’s a mini metro, so sometime between October 1980 and Mid 1982.

Not definitive but the beige Ford Escort MK2 estate outside the Ford dealer at around 1:07 would likely not be very old; the MK2 ceased UK production in 1980 though I expect estates were in the delivery chain until 1981, typical Ford being to tool and release saloon versions of the replacement model first.
Many of the cars in the video are from the sixties and seventies, also many French models and a Skoda saloon.

At 2:40 and 2:44 are two Escort MK3 5-door hatchbacks (the gold one - Ghia - opening door into the path of the camera car) so it's definitely 1980 or later.

Someone has commented on youtube that it's a lot earlier than 1984 as the bus station was still there, Google shows it closed in 1980

So it has to be 1980 then, due to both bus station closure and an Austin Metro

Between 80 and 84 as someone commented that there was a Co-op on the site by 84 but the bus station closed in 80, not sure when it was knocked down and the co-op built

You can see in the video that the station is roped off. As I recall, it was closed for least a couple of years before they demolished it and built a Co-Op.

The other Supermarket further up the road ‘The International’ had a serious fire in 1980 - but nobody can remember if it reopened after, o remained closed until a Gateway bought it out.

As it looks like it’s out of season. I’m happy with somewhere between winter 1980 and spring 1981.

Those film posters will bug me though. I really want to know what they are. I saw Empire Strikes Back, The Jaws Double bill, ET, and many other classics in that cinema. Very fond memories - seeing video of the town at this time brings them all flooding back. But it’s really weird to see things like the Bealesons Dept. Store and the Bus Station - because these feel like such distant memories, it’s almost like they never existed.

I think the key to this is identifying the poster at 08:13 which is much clearer and will give us the year

Could the sports car be off The cannonball run?

Also the man with the gun could be Arnie

Mad Max 2
Blade runner
48hrs
Tron
First Blood
