Fresh Freesat Install - Help

Hi All, Need some help.

I have just completed an extention on the house and want to install a 1st Freesat installation. Tuesday next week I have a Panasonic G10 arriving [with built in Freesat box] that will go in the lounge - but also would like the ability to watch freesat in a bedroom above [on a non built in freesat lcd tv].

I understand that I will need a HD box for the bedroom location - no problem.

But can you advise if I need a SINGLE or TWIN installation?

Argos offer a single and twin installation service that the majority seem to be delighted with. I'm not too fussed about recording [as mentioned in the twin installation] - so which do you think would be best? - could different channels be watched at the same time?. I need to know stuff like this and any help would be great..

Thanks Guys

You need at least a twin output LNB for two tuners (1 in the TV and one in a set top box), unlike a aerial feed you can not daisy chain or split them as every Dsat tuner requires exclusive access to an LNB output as the tuner sends commands for switching purposes.

Depending upon the price I would even consider future proofing by having a Quad (4 outputs) because a PVR for satellite is excellent and especially if you move to HD and the only practical and cheap way to record in HD is to use a HD PVR.

Assuming the twin install is all I needed, would this allow two simultanious users to watch two different channels at the same time?.

Sorry to sound a noob but could you advise us what a PVR is?

Cheers

A Personal Video Recorder - usually twin tuner and thus requiring two cables from dish.

Thanks.

Would the twin installation within this link be adequat for my needs?

You searched for FREESAT - 27 results

Yep.
While it states the twin is only needed for twin tuner PVR's in reality it can be used to feed two single tuner boxes. The blurb does state that any extra costs can be sorted with the installer and he may decide that drilling two holes in the house means more time and thus more money.

In that case [if i wasnt interested in recording programmes as opposed to just watching them], I could go for the single installation say to the lounge with the panasonic G10 built in...and get him to make an additional line from the dish into the bedroom to the additional HD box and non integrated tv ?

I believe there will be no cost difference to get a quad lnb (as opposed to double) so for a little extra cabling cost I would REALLY RECOMMEND getting two wires to your main living room in case you change your mind on PVR front, cost will be a few pounds whilst he's running one wire anyway.

If you are wondering about PVRs, it IS worth it, have a chat to someone who has Sky+, the freesat PVRs are similar but with less channels of course, I'm sure they will all tell you its changed their lives for the better and they would now not be without it.

I understand the value of what your saying here. If I had two wires into the living room and I still wanted to connect a line to the bedroom [as well as the two going into the lounge].. I would need three wires?...right?

Thanks again

you'd still need a twin installation. 1 wire for the G10, the other for the the additional box. As had been said before, might be worth getting a quad lnb so that you can add a recorder in the future if needed, or if you wanted to add a box to any additional rooms.

awesome... I think i'm almost there...

Is a PVR just a Freesat receiver box with a record function?

yeah, you would need 2 cables, 1 to record something, and the other cable lets you watch another channel

Not quite true you can record 2 and watch a 3rd using only 1 cable if you are using a foxsat-hdr just reduces your choices. See here

To th OP forget a twin lnb they are quiet rare and cost more than a quad anyway. You can get a quad on fleabay for peanuts.
