    Hi All,

There has been a beheading of a worker in a French factory & apparently, several others wounded. The severed head had arabic writing applied for whatever reason.

When Lee Rigby suffered the same fate here in the UK, at the time, I really hoped that it would not inspire other fanatics elsewhere to do the same thing but sadly, that has proven to be not the case.

Yesterday, a supposedly White Supremacist, tried to behead a Indian dentist in the UK to avenge for & to exact revenge for what happened to Lee Rigby & left him with very severe, life changing injuries.

It is so very sad that in such modern society & world that this sort of thing happens.

    Suave.

Expect it to go up further was a gun attack on a Hotel. Also hearing of a suicide attack in a Kuwaiti mosque. That's a lot of attacks in a short period of time, is there something symbolic about today?

I understand what you're saying (especially as someone who's not at all religious) but what religion were Pol Pot, Stalin and Hitler (to name but three)?

Yup, there is some truth in that. Religion is the easy target.

Hiding under the skirts of organised religious doctrine is as old as human history, bearing in mind of course organised religion was created and written by the religious hierarchy to use as a means of control and subjugation.

However, people carry out these atrocities in the name of religion. That is not religion, that is using religion as an excuse.

They're not using Religion as an excuse - they follow a warped and distorted version of Religion perpetrated by senior religious leaders with an agenda

    Senior religious leaders are people.

So it is still people carry out these atrocities in the name of religion, especially if its a warped and distorted version of the religion.

I take you back to my post - what religion or religious doctrine did Pol Pot, Stalin and Hitler follow? They weren't senior religious leaders either. You could almost argue they used their hatred of particular religious ideologies to spread their own evil, non-religious ideologies.

Well Hitler wasn't a massive fan of Judiusm was he, hence the final solution.

I used to be disgusted by communist Russia banning religion, but sadly I'm beginning to see their point.

I never mentioned Pol Pot, Stalin or Hitler, you did.

And that was not the point, down the ages religion has been used as an excuse to cover all sorts of unacceptable behaviour up for far to long imo, and ok it may not be the biggest cause of wars and such but it's damn close.

    I know, I mentioned them :)

I was questioning your statement, that's all.

I don't think anyone is disagreeing about the misappropriation of religious texts and ideology by bad people. But in itself, religion is not the biggest cause, IMO. I can't think of a single major religion that has as one of its core beliefs the systematic destruction of non-believers by any means. Bad people may come along and interpret things form a religious text to suit their own political or ideological agenda but that doesn't make the religion the cause.

It's just an excuse. If the religion wasn't there to be twisted to suit their actions, it would be race, land occupation or any other reason they could think of to justify killing others.

    Hi,

Not sure I agree with that at all - most species do not kill out of hatred, vengeance, revenge, ideology etc as these things do not exist within them, Sure they kill for food, survival & protection & at times for reproduction purposes but that is about it - they are smart enough to know not to usually kill for any other reasons - Human's on the other hand...

But a lot of species in the animal kingdom do kill/wound to assert dominance.

There we have the key - dominance. Equals power, supremacy and control.

Dominance over females, land, schooling, language, religion, politics, the air, the sea, other people, other lands etc etc.

Even on the forums: one opinion is trying to gain dominance over all other opinions.

    Hi,

Yes, but like I said, this is mainly either for reproductive purposes or territorial - not much else. Fights between species that result in death is quite limited & not as common as you might believe - even amongst Apex Predators.

Considering there are far more docile herbivores than predatory carnivores, most usually do not engage in battles unless it is absolutely necessary which is why the majority live in groups - mainly peacefully I might add - heck, even reptiles like snakes & crocodiles manage to co-exist with each other peacefully the vast majority of the time & they have been around decades of millions of years longer than us.

I think @Alan CD post quite succinctly puts what I meant. For me, dominance is a bit part of what is happening here, one twisted, warped version of an ideology trying to assert dominance over others. In this sense we're not too different than others in the animal kingdom. Yes we are complex beings with complex thought processes and capable of experiencing complex emotions etc... But at our core I believe we are still driven by our primal instincts. We still assert dominance however that is whether political, physical, psychological etc over others and will sometimes go to extreme lengths to do so.

I think you are forgetting about land. Many animals tend to have a set area of land which they patrol and is 'theirs'. Any other animal of the same species will be challenged if entering that defined area.

All predatory animals and some herbivores have 'their' land. Rhinos for example have killed many humans who wandered into their area.

Male lions have often killed other lions who have wandered into their patrolled area.

Edit: just noticed you mentioned 'territorial' - oops!

    I could go on.
Sure we are a bit more sophisticated in how we go about it now and because of that its on a grander scale
But its gone on forever and will continue to, because the natural instinct among some is that they have to be the Alpha

    Applies to Man equally
    this too
    this too .
Maybe when humans have evolved as far as snakes and crocodiles we will manage to co exist with each other peacefully, but I bet there is something killing its genetic brother somewhere every moment of the day ;)
