I have a PACE free to air digital receiver at present with no other cable/satellite.

What would be the cheapest way to get some French speaking News, Current affairs, documentary programs. Any web links/advice much appreciated as impatient French partner will not wait forever !!

Assuming this is a Sat FTA box not terrestrial, TV5 broadcasts widely:

    Réception numérique en clair

Satellite : Astra (cliquez pour voir l'empreinte)
    Type : Numérique-Clair
    Transpondeur : 112
    Fréquence : 12,610
    Polarisation : Verticale
    Symbol rate : 22000
    FEC : 5/6
    SID : 12240
    V-PID : 45
    A-PID : 46

    Réception numérique en clair
    Option 2

    Satellite : Hot Bird 6
    Type : numérique - clair
    Transpondeur : 131
    Fréquence : 11,137
    Polarisation : Horizontale
    Symbol rate : 27500
    FEC : 3/4
    SID : 7322
    V-PID : 3522
    A-PID : 3642

I'm sure there are others too a search on Google should help. ;)

You can't receive satellite channels with a digital terrestrial box.

To learn more about sat tv, and the various options for receiving French channels, go here

[link removed - please don't link to sites where files are available for recieving encrypted transmissions].

Yup, any DVB satellite receiver (+dish and LNB) should do the trick. Or you could use this as an excuse to get Sky :D You'll have to subscibe to a pakage to get TV5 this way however.

Or find someone who is getting rid of an old analogue satellite system ( e.g. upgrading to $ky digital).

Their old system will get several French analogue sat channels as long as the dish is moved to point at 5 degrees west of south from the original 19 degrees east Astra that was used by $ky analogue.
Most of the French channels there are in Secam - so your picture may end up as black 'n white (although many portable TVs and quite a few normal ones handle SECAM without telling you in the manual).

The new channels will have to be retuned on the satellite receiver (including the audio) - but this is not difficult.
    Chris Muriel, Manchester.
