Shoka, be careful as some of the disks have French subs that are not removable on many players.

If I were going to France, I'd be picking up The Man Who Wasn't There if I could find it cheap enough. It has both the original black & white and the colour versions of the movie and DTS too (not that you really need it with this movie though). It's a 3 disk set. French subs can't be turned off though (but I'd be able to do it on my player).

Of course, don't expect to trade any of these disks on as they have French writing all over them and no-one will want them because of that - even if they do have DTS

I'm going to be getting the french r2 version of 'Blood:The last Vampire' because it apparently has DTS which the UK version does not. I'm also going to get the french 'Dawn of the Dead' as it appears to by vastly superior to the crappy mono 4:3 uk version.

I was there last week and picked up the SE of Crying Freeman as it is widescreen (UK is 4:3), English soundtrack and has some nice extras (though in French). Vidocq is a similar package.

If you are not bothered about extras or forced subtitles the double set of Smoke and Blue in the Face is cheap at the moment (£15 comapred to nearer £30 for the 2 on R1, though you get commentaries etc on R1). Not seen any confirmation of a UK release.

If you like Tati, Jour de Fete and M Houlots Holiday are going out of print and are cheap. No English S/T but these are essentiallly slient comedies and the OOP Criterions are very expensive.

Man Who is on special in FNAC at the moment (£13ish).

Thinking that Wag the Dog UK did not have a commentary I spicked that up on special only to find sources differ as to what is on the UK one - anyone confirm?

Nice version of Day of the Beast too, although cheaper in Spain.
Also they have teh only disc of Kafka, but as this is Pathe and Sonderburgh I am betting on an SE in US or UK at somepoint.

Which city are you going to?

There's a great print of 'Johnny Got His Gun' over there as well, it has burnt in subs, but is pretty much unavailable anywhere else in the world, as far as I know.

    Mulholland drive has imposed subs.
blood the last vampire has indeed a DTS track but the subs are only in french. not sure if imposed or not

French DVDs are in general more expensive than other DVDs.
I would check out either Carrefour and similar places (for cheaper DVDs) or Fnac as they always have a large selection (but higher prices)

    I would recommend Dark City

I think Encaser found a "workaround" to remove them.

No, by imposed he means non-removable. It depends on your player though. I can remove all subtitles on mine as I have user prohibitions disabled.

    Removing forced subtitles:

Been messing about with my Toshiba (for years!) trying to remove locked subs
and I've found a work around for every disc I've tried (French Barton Fink,
Italian Blood Simple, French The Hit etc).

Go to the menu as usual and choose the original soundtrack (ie English) with
the disc country's subtitles (which are locked on many discs).

Press play then stop after a few seconds. The normal problem with removing
locked subs is you can't get into the 'set up' menu (not a problem on my
Samsung 709 -removes subs no problem) without pressing stop (or pressing
stop twice on many players -which then resets the disc to locked subs).

Anyway, press stop (after play/enter) and then change the subtitles to
'French Off' or 'Italian Off' etc. When you normally hit play the disc would
bypass that setting and go back to locked subs -but instead of pressing play
(after changing the subs to 'off') go to the title/chapter/go-to time menu
(it's the 'T' button in the bottom right-hand corner of my remote) and and
press it once (no more presses) then press play as normal -and no more subs!

It's worked with over 15 discs with no problem. The only problem was with my
Italian Blood & Wine -easily fixed though. Again choose the English track
(with Italian [locked] subs) then hit play/enter then stop after a few
seconds. I then presssed the 'T' (title/chapter/go-to time menu) button
until the goto time section comes up (that's 3 presses on my Toshiba) and
enter a valid time (eg 1:11:11 (one hour, eleven minutes and eleven seconds)
and then press play (the film then goes to that time -just go back to the
start using the chapter/search button as normal) -again the subs don't
    appear!

Never failed for me. You can change things about too if it's the audio you want changed.

DVDs are very expensive in France compared to UK/Canadian/USA. They like to pay it seems and that's why they get all that extra cardboad.

I could name you loads (I have over 50) but what sort of things are you intending to buy?

Don't jump immediately just because it has DTS.

I have the French version of 'The Commitments', which is anamorphic and 5.1 against the UK P&S (I think) and 2.0. I also have the French Nikita which is, I believe, the only version with decent subtitles - though I have heard that there is a UK version in the offing.

That French The Commitments is very nice -but it's the same disc that's released Europe-wide (except UK) so it would usually be available much cheaper elsewhere.

However, this time it's in the Amazon.fr sale here at the fab price of €9.99 or €15.70 including shipping (around £11.30).

That shipping ain't cheap but you can add other stuff to that and the price doesn't rise too much.

I was thinking about sleepy hollow, and I heard a rumour about a DTS version of the matrix which, I was a bit ambiguous about believing.

Have to wait for the Wachowskis to get cracking on the new transfer of The Matrix before you get DTS. They talk about it a lot, but if they will ever get round to it is another thing entirely.
