Can any one point me in the direction of a VCR with built in Freevie tuner?
It is of course rubbish what you need is one of these:
or one of these:
With the Freeview PVR's I assumed I wouldn't be able to tape, say, from my NTL box?
Is that correct?
No you will need a Tivo or a DVD recorder - lots have hard disks in now - but this is not a bitstream record.
Vhs is dead - time to forget it!
Hi, what is a bitstream output?
'Bitstream' is the digital signal before being converted to analogue for watching on a standard analogue screen. Recording the bitstream would give a better quality picture, but if the decoding & encoding is done well then there should be very little noticeable difference from a bitstream recording.
TiVo is often knocked for only recording from an analogue input but IMHO the quality is better than most people will be able to see on a 32" TV etc. Even on my 37" plasma the difference from the origional feed from my Freeview box and via the TiVo is just about unnoticeable. If you can notice it then there are 'hacks' available for TiVo to up the bitrate to improve the PQ further.
TiVo is the way I would recommend you going as it is the only PVR that will record from all the UK TV platforms. If you don't want a PVR and just want to record the soaps etc then get a standard VCR and separate Freeview box as this will be cheaper - Freeview boxes from around £30 & VCR's from around £60. When one dies you just replace the dead unit & not the whole lot!
