I used to have NTL Cable but am on Sky now. I still have NTL cable input connection (no box) in one room which I use as the ariel cable to give me the normal programs.

If I buy a Freeview box, use the NTL cable as the ariel input and connect the Freeview box to the TV, will it work please?

As I get very good quality pictures now using the NTL cable, I am assuming it acts as an ariel although I do not have NTL cable TV.

Nope, the analogue feed via the NTL network does not carry the signal for the Freeview channels.
The analogue signals are broadcast on the network by NTL as part of their license/franchise although they will sooner or later be removed when NTL go fully digital as TW are in the process of doing.
