I know some of you will point me towards Sky+ when saying this. We used to have Skydigital but no need for 200+ channels, so we cancelled the subscription and tried Freeview.

We are now looking at replacing the aging (and hiddeously complicated) VCR. The option is DVD recorder, which in terms of complexity, still (i think) relies on setting a timer and channel (and limits your viewing to one channel?), so the Pace Twin seems to be the more viable option. Or does it...?

I read some time ago that tests were being carried out with a full freeview EGP which was to be extended nationwide. On top of that the software would enable the Pace Twin to have a Sky+ style recording feature - simply search the EPG and click a button to set the timer, channel, etc...

So, does the Twin have Sky+ simple recording feature?

Is it not region specific or dependent on a software download?

We'd just select our programme from the EPG, press a single button and it would automatically be logged for recording...?

afaik, now nationally rolled out. It was implemented transmitter-by-transmitter, which may be what you've heard.

Out of interest, what are the full benefits and drawbacks of the Twin Tuner? Do you have one at all - what do you make of it? Worth the purchase?

Benefits are pretty self-evident; off-air recording exactly equal in quality to original broadcast, complete with summary details etc. One-touch convenience. Watch one whilst recording another. etc etc...

Drawbacks: The software in the Pace Twin has been notoriously buggy. (touch wood) the latest download appears to have improved matters. So, after purchase, you may have to await the next broadcast of updated software to get it stable and functional.

Small hard disk - ~10 hours' space.

Apart from May 04 the Twin has been an excellent piece of kit - mine has been very reliable.

    Buy one!

what was wrong in May 04? I've seen one new for £170 so, i think it'll be a purchase!

anyone got one which is aligned to the Wrekin transmitter in shropshire?

Also, is it easy to transfer recordings to DVD/VHS if required. I doubt we'll do this (we rarely record anythign for keeps) but it'll be nice to have the option.

    Can't speak for your transmitter.

Copying from Twin >> an external recorder (eg VHS, DVDR):

Connect a cable from the 2nd SCART on the Pace to the recorder. Set recorder to AV input. Press play on Pace and Record on recorder.

Any editing has to be done either manually at the time of recording (as on VHS) or afterwards using edit features of the recorder (as maybe on DVD).

The May04 software really got the Twin a bad name - kept failing to record

As to transfer to DVD - look at TwinRIP and copy recordings to your PC
