My Dad is getting a freeview box and I just read an advice article in 'what video' that says the 16:9 broadcasts can be watched on a 4:3 tv without the black lines.....does this mean the is picture morped by the freeview box.

Do some freeview boxes have the ability to broadcast in letterbox like my sky box?...........help!!

    Thanks
    Andy

Freeview boxes can be watched on a 4:3 TV either by using letterbox ("black lines" top and bottom) or in 4:3 by chopping of the right and left hand bits of the screen. Its the the same as your Sky.

Depending on how big your TV is letterbox may be the better option, but this depends on what you're watching. WS Films can look VERY ODD in 4:3 mode (there's no pan & scan like the old days!) as can more and more home grown programmes as the makers are tending to ignore the '4:3 safe mode' more and more these days.
