freesat vs. diy system

    I'm thinking about getting freesat, but as a newbie would appreciate guidance.
    Why is a viewing card required with freesat when the channels are (I think) free to air? If you buy separate bits of kit I assume no card is required, also is this approach better value? Can more channels be received with other kit?

    Not all the channels are free to air. Lots ITV, CH4, CH5 etc are free to view which means you need a card. You can either buy this card from Sky (£20) + all the kit or get the freesat install its up to you.

    If you already have Sky and cancel your existing card will still get FTV.
