Sky has a non-subscription service for free to air/view services see www.freesatfromsky.com which doesn't require connection to telephone line. (Free to view - are encrypted free channels e.g. ITV/Channel4, Free to air - BBC Channels).
A box is purchased for £150 plus £20 for a viewing card which lasts several years. Or if you already have a box you just pay for the viewing card.

While you can upgrade to a full Sky Digital subscription, its debatable whether you would be forced to connect to a phone line.

The removal of the phone requirment is a blessing, something they should do for first time PAY subscribers as well. If people want to use the interactive elements to the full extent then they will connect a phone line otherwise let them be:)
