    Hi,

Just at my parents house and they tell me that Sky sent them an email saying that they can have a free Sky+HD box for being a loyal customer. So my dad said yes, forgot about it and some time later a box showed up.

Upon looking at the actual free STB it looked a bit old (big and 2 SCART sockets) and said May 2009 on the back. On closer inspection and some Googling it appears to be a Samsung 300/500GB. This is older than their current Sky/Amstrad DRX890. Any ideas what Sky are playing at by sending out a older/inferior box? Dad is less than impressed (no instructions or anything) so will probably be giving them an earful on Monday!

This offer is supposed to be for customers who currently have an old SD Sky box. Customers receive a refurbished, Pace, Samsung or DRX780 Sky+HD box to exchange them with.

Looks like your dads account had an older box listed on it instead of the DRX890.

That would make a bit more sense, thanks!

Yeah, that's right, give the gift provider an earful on Monday, that's the way. But perhaps PPP would be more appropriate.

You won't get anywhere being rude or moaning at the 'customer service' staff. You have to be polite, yet firm and you will get results.

My In-laws got a free HD box last year to replace an old SD version and it was the latest WiFi model, only 500GB though.

Generally they should give the wifi box as its their way of combating card sharing (the wifi boxes can't be used for it). Just seems like an error on their part

Nah, sounds like the usual sharp practice by Sky to me. A refurb box of that age? I doubt if it'll last long - it's already 7 years old!

The boxes have nothing to do with card sharing... the encryption has already changed to eliminate card sharing of the HD channels and all Sky HD boxes with the exception of the early Thomson boxes support this.
