Reading the freeNAS forums they don't suggest loading it into a VM environment. Have you had a read on their forums? there are plenty of threads and a sticky somewhere. I've not used VM but do you get a unique fixed MAC address? If you do then can't you allocate a fixed ip from your router to that MAC address and then you should be good

Right for FTP i followed this guide
    FreeNAS® 9.2.1.7 FTP Configuration
to setup FTP on FreeNAS. I then setup port forwarding on my router to send request to my port on the FreeNAS box that I exposed. Using Filezilla that all seems to work out ok. Not too sure about access from app or browser though just yet :)

You can definitely integrate ownCloud with Nas4Free. Not sure about FreeNAS as it a dead project for a few years which has been replaced to Nas4Free

FreeNAS is alive and well. It's different from the original FreeNAS, which as you say became NAS4free.
