Anyone know the best material to make a piece of MDF 6mm thick completely flat?. Ive had a change of mind fixing it to the wall and plan to have it slightly extended from the wall by about 10 inches so I can have it lower. The first step however is to get the screen completely flat :)

Would 12mm deep by say 24mm width MDF strips around 4 edges make a good frame?, or should I be looking at other types of wood?.

    thanks

    /James

    Hi James

I have used the same material for my screen @ 2.2m x 1.3m.

I made a frame for the rear using 50mm x 25mm planed timber & mitred the ends so it formed a picture frame effect. I then screwed the mdf to it from the screen side through to the timber & put a couple of coats of paint on the screen.

I then mounted the the screen by putting 75mm screws through the screen & frame (at tne top & bottom edge), into a pair of 50mmx50mm batons I had fastened to the wall.I then painted over the screw heads.

The result is a fantastic screen that has not warped at all for just under £10 !!

I used the batons behind the screen to give it a more detached look else it just looks like a painted wall. Plus, it means I can backlight it at a later stage.

My tip is to get someone to help lift the screen into place when you mount it. I did mine alone & had a hell of a job!

Thanks for the information. I like your website and look forward to the final pictures :). I agree that the screen will look better slightly away from the wall as it allows options of expanding ideas such as lighting behind the screen etc :).

Did you buy the batons etc from B&Q? or a local DIY store?.

The batons were made out of left over timber from the frame of the soundproofed wall. I got it from Jewsons in 4m lengths but over calculated what was needed so it worked out to be one of those happy oversights! With a project like this it pays to go with the flow design wise. Until it is on the wall it is hard to really picture how it will look.

The web site is very out of date at the mo (my dad has taken his digital camera back!) & I'll put some more piccys on there soon showing the screen etc to give you a better idea of how it looks in the flesh.

    - you don't seem to have a link in your signature....

Like the idea of lights behind the screen - coupled with a remote dimmer they would be great before and after the film - we stumble about in the dark and then get a burst of light when I find a light switch at the moment.

That "www" button doesn't seem to be universal. I don't have one, for example.

Perhaps it's configurable in the profile settings? I'll take a look...

    Edited to add...

Oh now come on, this is silly! In the very post where I say I don't have a www button, suddenly I do!

I didn't have one, as I didn't have a homepage set - added a homepage in my profile, and now I do!
