Foxsat HD - lip sync via spdif on all channels?

I think I must be very sensitive to lip sync issues. My new Foxsat HD (Not bothered about recording) is connected to a Panasonic TH42PX80 via HDMI. I can detect lip sync on some channels and the outstanding (image) BBC HD is of course terrible. My wife doesn't see the more subtle sync issues.

When listening on my AV amp the sync is very far off and essentially unwatchable. This was never a problem with the Sony Sky box I was using before. I can't correct te sync because I the feature will not give negative synching.

What are my options?

1) Back to the old sky box and freesat card - much poorer SD picture
2) Try a different HD box - are there issues with these too?
3) Try Freeview - no HD and no summer signal due to hills and trees (been there)
4) Audio out rather than optical so no 5.1
5) Grin and bear it.

Any advice appreciated. The foxsat HD model is current and running the most up to date software.

thanks,
Daren

A few people including myself have noticed a few programs with sync problems on BBCHD lately which may explain some of the problems you have encountered. The audio is late.

Your plasma should automatically account for it's video processing delays and the audio should be in sync when listening to it directly.

However you will need to set the appropriate audio delay manually in your AV amp.

The BBC have special test card to help you do this as it can be very difficult to "guesstimate" the value of the delay.

Set the delay and see what happens.

Thanks. Whilst the effect is less pronounced via HDMI on the plasma, I can still sometimes see a difference c.f. the sky box - on channels other than BBC HD (BBC HD is obvious). Hence I wondered if it is a box-specific issue and I am overly sensitve. I guess different people lip read different amounts? Unfortunately the amp doesn't correct time delays, so an upgrade is due

there is lip sync compensation on the foxsat

There is indeed, but I did see a report (somewhere, can't find it now) that there may have been an issue with the foxsat forgetting the setting.

Hence play safe and set it in the amp

I read that too but his amp does not have lip sync correction so it's currently his only work around. Incidentally I have found that retuning to a SD channel and back to the HD often resolves the problem

Aahhh missed that bit. Well in that case he has no choice.

V surprised a 5.1 amp won't have an audio delay setting somewhere.

Yes, my info is the foxsat tolerence is +-20ms. Retuning can give a more accurate sync.

Played with that, but unfortunately it can't do negative msec. Torchwood on HD last night was passable, but for me there is still tiny dissociation. When things are in sync there is a tangible engagement that is just lacking with the foxsat HD on pretty much all the channels. It's hard to explain, but it is very real.

I'll try another box before giving up completely.

Thanks all,

Replaced it with a Bush - £98 from Argos. Black and White menus but lip synch via HDMI is good and better still, lip sych via spdif is fine . And £30 cheaper too.

Wife is impressed by picture quality too. So if anyone has the remote code for an all for one 7555, that would make my day!
