Well as you may have seen in an earlier post I have been fortunate to track down a family of Elusive Foxes hold up in one of the otter holts at Rooksbury. The last shots I got were through a load of reeds so while I was happy I knew with some extra effort i could get some better pictures. The upshot was that i waded across the river (yes I got very wet !) and carefully cut some of thew reeds away with scissors. I have spent mucho hours waiting for the buggers to come out but unfortunately the area has been busy and there has been no show.

I went down tonight at about 6.30ish and had a wonder round and it was very very quite, was the football on ? I noticed the reed moving around allot but it was so deep in that there was no chance of a pictures, so off I trott and try and come in behind them, sure enough the two cubs ( not three as I had originally thought) were rolling around playing. I got to within about 6 feet and bang they caught my scent or I made a sound not sure which and they were gone.

Feeling pretty ****** off at this point I walked back around the side of the lake and went back to my original point and after about 30mins I was greeted this one of 8 shots before they disappeared again !

Sadly I had to shoot at ISO 1800 I think, 400mm @ F4 and 180th hand held  thank god for VR as the sun had gone down behind trees.

I hope you like them as much as I do.

so cute
but keep an eye on it or it might eat your kids.

<Groans> :nono:

...you really must learn to add smillies Weetsie - where appropriate that is of course ;)

First shot is stunning - crystal clear on the eyes, which you have managed to get looking right at you :smashin:

A little concerned with your reed cutting mind ...

Nige

if you look at my last post of the foxes there were only a few reeds across the front the rest is where the cubs have been playing, I took great care to be quiet and very careful and most certainly did not go in hacking around in fact i use a small pair of scissors, so feel very confident that nothing was harmed or disturbed. Hopefully the fact they are still quite happy reflect this but yes there most certainly is a line that should not be crossed.

I took my 8 year old son out this morning at 5am ( he asked ) and we saw the Vixen, he was so mesmerised as I was at him I didn't take a picture..... a moment I will remember for a long time.

I really like the sunset shot. With the memory that goes with it, I'd be quite pleased with that one.

It's a shame the man-made holt has such an obviously un-natural entrance, but it's a lovely look on the fox's face.

Lovely shots:hiya: Worth the effort to be sure
Sunrise has lovely ambience:clap:
5am:rolleyes:... Still in bed!!
Unfortunately urban foxes are not very popular ATM ... Im not even reffering to weetsie's comment ( which im sure was tongue in cheek)

They just seem to compete with rats to tear up rubbish bags and spill trash all over the place:mad:

Agreed but you know the score you take what ya given :D The biggest problem for me is that behind the river is a rather big and untended orchard with stingers and such up to my head so no chance a getting a picture in there. i am hoping to catch either of the parents out hunting... tom evening may well be worth a go as the footy is on and the lake will be dead.

The irony is that as you know I have been chasing Otters for several years now and running around after leads of so call sightings, most of which are problably ducks :D the local Otter specialist who was involved in the breeding and re-introduction in Winchester has confirmed they have been around and the wildlife officer has confirmed several have been killed by car locally. So this Holt is out of commission but we have two more, so you never know.

I know, I am keeping there presence and placement guarded for exactly that reason, they have no need to venture out of the reserve as it is full of rabbits for their tea :smashin:

Nice shot - I like the play of the shadows on the fur

 :D

I have some badger shots I quite like, however, I suffer with hayfever and had to lie flat in long grass whilst getting bitten stupid by mosquito's to get them.

Would do it again though. ;)

LOL as would Ian, as would I. Been out the last couple of evening but the buggers have been playing in the undergrowth and just not accessable. Missed a perfect King fisher shot, left my camera on timer :D and by the time I had fumbled to get it back to normal it was offski...Grrrr only seen two this year so not happy. did get this late last evening though.

Nice :smashin:
