    Hello,

does anyone have experience of both the Dreambox 500s (or bigger) and the Fortec Star 5100 ULTRA

As a satellite newbie would I be better off with the Fortec? The Linux side of the Dreambox doesn't worry me - I'm a developer- but would it be advisable to start with a simpler system?

Comments and advice much appreciated

    Thanks.

I have watched people playing with and seen demos of both.

The Fortec is easier to use as it is also sold as a stright consumer box.
The Dreambox is great for techies, especially those with Linux or similar experience (e.g. Unix or whatever).
The Fortec is very similar to (same factory etc.) as the USA Pansat 2500 and is also sold as "Blackbird" in North America.
A search for AL7bar may reveal some interesting Fortec features.
As a feedhunter, only the Blind Search feature is of interest to me.
There are external forums around for both boxes.
    (Use Google to find)
I suggest you have at some of these forums to get an idea of user level, customer satisfaction, annoyances, quirks etc.

    ...I agree....

The Dreambox is certainly for techies...

There is not much it wont do... but dont expect it to be a wife friendly experience...

I have not seen anything to better the Dreambox so far....

WAF is not an issue. I've used Linux and Unix in the past (even got paid for it ;) )

Am looking at the AL7Bar forum now, no doubt will get even more confused...

Do the Fortec's come patched as standard? If not, how easy is it to get hold of and apply the patch? How does the Fortec compare to a Technomate 5500?

Can they all be "patched" to access "Other" free channels (with appropriate codes)? Do they all take cards (is the CAM the slot or is that a CI?). Why the different brands of CAM? Can the Fortec emulate all the various types?

Seem some good deals out there:

Fortec Star 5100 Ultra 80cm Motorised Deal £200
Technomate 7600 VA Motorised +Official ART Card £245

How big a dish do I need to use an ART card?

Please forgive any obvious stupidity in the questions and cheers for you replies :)
