The ipods are nothing but fashion accessories and the Sony HD players are nothing but useless devices that Sony havent got a clue on how to make properly especially with their blased EU cap and Sonic Stage!

I was thinking of getting the Creative Zen Micro which looked very good and had great features especially with the new price drop but then opted for the iRiver H10 which so far even though there are a couple of niggles I have must say its absolutly superb the SRS WOW audio brings life into the music and has a colour screen and was only £180! Not many people out there still realise that iRiver is the no.1 top brand when it comes to portable audio but still opt for iPOD (I think apple stole the 'i' from iRiver!)

I returned my H10. Horribly buggy. And iRiver Plus is far worse than Sonicstage.

I don't think there is a solution yet. The Sony hardware is very very good, but let down by the software. I guess an amalgamation between the Sony HD and iTunes would be the solution. Who's gonna be first to market?

I had Zen Micro, it was pretty good, but I exchanged it for HD3. HD3 has better sound quality, even playing mp3 files and much longer battery life. Its aluminium case is much cooler than the plastic case of Zen Micro. SonicStage is a crap but I've got no problem with it.

I have tried all the above players and can say without doubt that the ipod is still the best portable mp3 player on the market. The click wheel is excellent and far superior to any other navigation interface and the itunes software does its job fairly well.

I find it really funny that with the NW-HD1 various forums have people moaning that you need to use the cradle for charging/downloading, and then just as many comments from people moaning that the NW-HD3 doesn't come with a cradle!! Some people just like to moan ...

I went for the iPod because I thought iTunes was so good. I've never had any problems with the iPod synching either.

Meanwhile, purists will tell you that anything that ferks about with the original signal is not good.

What's with all these 'my player's better than yours ?' threads anyway ? Can't we all just get along ......

I got the Zen Ztra Jukebox, and to be honest, The sound quality is absolutely fantastic.

Now the bottom line for me is sound quality. The user interface of the Zen Xtra Jukebox is perfectly fine for me. The screen works, and I am able to fine the tunes I want. The 30GB storage gives me plenty of space for tunes. Especially as I encode at 192kbps MP3 format.

Sure - it's a bit bigger than the Ipod - but it is still perfectly portable. And as for the sound quality - it is MUCH better than the IPOD and even with the bundled headphones gives a great low and high end response (I am replacing them tho as I am a bit of an audio snob)

As for SRS WOW effects and EAX effects... leave em all alone - just set up your EQ properly.

To be honest, even though the Zen Xtra is better than the IPOD, there really is not a huge amount of difference in playback quality between most players. It comes down to how well you have configured the player, and also how well you have set the EQ. Headphones do make a significant difference also.

The Zen Xtra is not very well built though. My friend has a 60gb Xtra and it reminds me of an old cassette player! It is plastic and the battery cover kept coming off.

And, in my opinion, the bundled headphones are worse then any I have seen!

Don't knock it - it's useful for lurkers like me who want to know what to spend their hard-earned money on!

Think I'm more interested in the minis anyway and my local retailer says Sony are about to launch a new series. Has anyone heard about this?

AFAIK the HD5 won't be out for a while. The new Minidiscs are coming first.

The build quality of my 30Gb is excellent and the metalised battery cover fits very securely. Sound quality with the headphones supplied is superb and is also very good when played through my processor and power amp. I chose it over an ipod for two simple reasons, cost and serviceability. Being able to replace the battery quickly may prove very useful in the future.

Ringing creative too hard for you? Admit it there is no problem for either brand to get spares. The question is still cost though.

    Anyway, this is way :offtopic:

I've just seen a review of the HD5 on T3. Says it's going to be available from may. Pretty positive review too, especially re battery life (40 hours).
