One of my sons has just bought some foreign film and has to watch it with subtitles to understand what it's on about.

So, he has the sound turned up for all the film noise, explosions etc and then has to read the dialogue on the screen whilst the actors witter away in a unrecognisable language.

Now this is ok for certain Region 0 films, but ones that have a storyline? I just can't understand it!

Does anyone else watch films with subtitles?

Wow! I didn't know other languages were unrecognizable. I thought I was thick!

The likes of Das Boot, Akira are a million times better with the original language with subtitles.

Hell even Mad Max yank dubbed version is terrible!

I agree James45........they are boring that way too. They just don't hold my interest at all having to concentrate on subtitles to understand the film.

I'd put dubbed movies in the same bracket as comedy shows with canned laughter.

    Different reasons, same dustbin.

I haven't invested thousands of pounds on my AV system only to basically read a book on my television.

The inevitable English language US remakes are always better anyway and any film they don't decide to remake was probably not worth watching in the first place.

Errr Das Boot 5.1 German mix is better than the English Dub.

Akira is terrible with the yank mix. Mad Max is awful- I mean not like a straight dub, but I'm pretty sure dubbed badly on purpose. Just watch the Goose in the cafe for instance with the yank and aussie mix.

So Seven Samuari is not worth watching? Hidden Fortress? etc etc...

There are a large amount of films that should be watched with subtitles.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon springs to mind but then watching any dubbed Martial Arts flick reminds me of Eddie Murphys p*** take :D .

Das Boot was was also a great movie.

Can you honestly take these films seriously with some southern american accent bodged over the original script. :suicide:

    Stace :D

Nevermind subtitles during the actual film, you've just named two films that can't even be bothered to use proper English in their titles!

(Although I suppose 'Samurai' doesn't have a direct translation so that might be acceptable)

    Hey,

I can't believe there are still people like Mr Smith who think like this!

Shame on you, Mr Smith, but good on your son for avoiding your blinkered attitude to the gems that exist in world cinema!

And to Balthazar Smith - you obviously know jack about cinema, or "good" cinema! Shame on you, for even daring to come to this forums!
