    Hi

Just got a 1.6 zetec, it sounds v throaty but i believe it has the normal size exhaust and back box. Is it meant to sound throaty?

Also the steering wheel shakes over 55 mph, thoughts on what could be?

And lastly first time I've had a Ford not sure if just me but it doesn't seem to like crawling along the mway in first gear?

First question, did you not test drive the car before purchase?

The wheel shaking could simply down to misalignment/balancing, prob worth getting that checked out.

As for the noise you mention.. that is not normal for a 1.6 zetec engine, how many miles does it have on the clock? Does it have a full service history? How long ago was the MOT? Any items on the advisory?

Get the front wheels balanced , but its very likely the wheels themselves are bent or have flat spots -- our roads are in such a state that wheels can get wrecked easily .

Small petrol engines will sound growly ( it probably the air intake you are hearing rather than the exhaust ) and tend to hunt on very light throttle due to attempts to keep the emissions under control . You could replace the plugs and air filter just to be on the safe side but I doubt its faulty in any way .
