Hi,
my 60gb PS3 was in storage for over 12 months, working fine before it went in. When I dug it out and put it on my network it asked to update and I let it. Since then it will hang if I try to play any media from any source. It will occasionally play or rip cd's immediately after a restore system but once switched off and back on it returns to its old tricks. My assumption is it is a problem with the last update. Problem is now a new update is available it hangs when I select the update option. Is there a way to force an update? I am loathed to send it away and part with my hard earned if the fix is to press 3 or 4 buttons in a predetermined sequence...

Ok, answered my own question. Found the main addition to 2.5 software was access to the recovery menu. Took a bit of experimentation but once in you can reload the existing firmware or update it via a usb device. Did it and all of my issues (freezing, blank screen playing games etc) all cleared up. Very happy!:)
