    OK for those of you who updated your MacBooks & MBPs with Superdrive Firmware 2.1, you might want to actually check your drives actually work........

    I did this (with the Apple updater), and hadn't checked my drive. The drive will only play commercial disks now, and will NOT write CDs or DVDs, nor read older DVDrs......

    In the meantime, Apple have withdrawn the firmware update.

    *There is NO known fix at the moment, apart from a replacement drive*

    Not happy.

    One option is to get in touch with your local Apple shop and see what they'll do - some were actually replacing the WHOLE machine!!!!

    I've got in touch with my supplier, and am awaiting a reply. I will post up as soon as I know any more.

    Wasn't this an issue about 3 months ago? As I understand Apple took down the update pretty quickly. Is there a later problem?

    how does one check what their current firmware is?
