    Hi,

I have a budget of £1k for a set of floorstanders for HiFi use only (to go with Musical Fidelity X-150 integrated amp and X-Ray V3 CD). So far I've demo'd KEF IQ9 and Dali Ikon 6. Overall I preferred the Ikons, which had very detailed and natural midband and treble. My only minor reservation (apart from the slightly ugly cabinets) was that the bass lacked the power of the IQ9s, though this was only particularly evident on with bass heavy tracks (I used four tet "rounds" to test the bass).
Can anyone recommend any other floorstanding speakers worth listening to in this price range? Any thoughts on the Ikon 7s or the recently discontinued Monitor Audio GR20's?

    Thanks
    Ray

i can certainly recommend the GR20's if you can find them for sale still, however your amp is only just about able to power them.....tbh you will find at some point you might want to upgrade the amp to get the best from them, either by biamping or getting a whole new more powerful amp.....(would recommend same as i have, MF A5....sounds gorgeous...heh)

soundwise tho the MF and MA products usually work very nicely together...

There's a lot of choice around £1K especially if you are willing to go for used or exdem.

I have the GR20's, just replaced them in my main system for Kef Refs.

I have used the GR20's with lower power integrateds and pre/powers including MF and they sounded fab. They do like a powerful amp, but then again most/all speakers will show an improvement if you use a more powerful amp.

Another suggestion would be the ProAc Studio 125's.

Alternatively have you considered a sub paired with a decent set of stand mounts?

Something like a Rel/ProAc combo can work really well for music.

I recommend adding Triangle speakers to the shortlist too. IMO they sound great with MF.

I would also audition the PMC GB1, cracking speaker for the money and doesn't look too imposing.

GR20's are a steal at current discount prices. In fact I think they were a bargain at the original £1500 rrp!

Thanks for all of the suggestions. The current offer on the MA GR20s at Sevenoaks seems to good to miss, so I've reserved a pair!

You must must MUST hear the PMCs!!!

No I don't own them - I just think they are the best thing for £1k

Please don't commit until you've heard them!

i swear, the day i end up being forced out of my current job (its all turned salesbased in a bad way and i hate ripping people off....really isnt in my nature) i'm gonna go for jobs in hifi shops....altho i have my preferences, i'd be most interested in what someone else needed to hear and find setups that would suit them the most even if i didnt like it so much myself.......

but with 5 years at my current employers i'm not gonna rock the boat......i'll let them do that cuz i end up with a better redundancy package...lol

anyhow, let us know what you end up with and how it sounds :)
