It could be a background process that's running at the time. Next time you're online try opening task manager, go to the process tab along the top and click the "CPU" header to list everything in order of the ammount of CPU being utilised. Shrink it down a bit so as to not take over your screen and the next time you see the hourglass have a look to see what is working away. If you post the name of the process on here i can try and identify what it is a part of if you need.
