256986 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256986/) Description of the Microsoft Windows registry
SYMPTOMS
You experience unexpected results if you try to use the infrared control cable to change a set-top box to channels that have equal consecutive digits. For example, if you try to change to channel 100, 44, or 225, the channel changes to channel 10, 4, or 22.

CAUSE
This issue occurs if the set-top box is not using the same timing setting as Microsoft Windows Media Center Edition 2005 is using. Some set-top boxes require a specific timing setting to change the channel. Windows Media Center Edition 2005 can use a fast, medium, or slow timing setting. Set-top boxes may have to have a different timing setting than fast, medium, or slow.

RESOLUTION
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
1. Close Media Center.
2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the following registry subkey, where {TunerID} is a value listed in a CLSID format:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Service\Video\Tuners\{TunerID}\{TunerID}\UserSettings

Notes
• There is a separate subkey under the Tuners subkey for each tuner card.
• The separate subkey each tuner card is listed in a CLSID format. For example, the subkey is enclosed in brackets ({}) and appears similar to the following:
{A799A800-A46D-11D0-A18C-00A02401DCD4}
• The specific tuner is identified in the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Service\Video\Tuners\{TunerID}\DevName
• Under each tuner subkey, there is a UserSettings subkey.
4. Double-click UserSettings.
5. In the right pane, right-click STBCode, and then click Modify.

Note Use caution when you edit this string. The format is important and must be maintained to avoid unknown consequences to Media Center.
6. Click in the Value data box one time. All the text is now unselected.
7. Press HOME to move the pointer all the way to the left of the Value data box.
8. Press the RIGHT ARROW key to move the pointer to the right until it moves just past the <keyinterval> tag.

Note If this string does not exist, this probably means that a set-top box has not been installed and configured or that the entries have been removed. If this string does not exist, run the set-top box configuration steps, and then start this procedure again.
9. A number is listed between the <keyinterval> tag and the </keyinterval> tag. This number may be 250, 175, or 100. These numbers correlate to Slow, Medium, and Fast, respectfully. Increase the number by 75, and then click OK. For example, if the number was previously 250, replace 250 with 325, and then click OK.

Note This example is an arbitrary estimate. You may have to use smaller increments until you can change channels correctly. You may type any number from 50 through1000 between the <keyinterval> tag and the </keyinterval> tag.
10. Close Registry Editor, and then restart the computer to apply the changes.
11. Start Media Center, and then see whether you can change channels correctly. If not, close Media Center, and then repeat these steps.
