Just read over on AVS that the 720p banding 'issue' will be (apparently) fixed by Sony via firmware upgrade - this applies to the HS51, but assume it'll happen to the HS50 too - only difference is whether it makes a difference due to the lack of the ethernet port on the HS50.

That’s the good news I’ve been waiting for

Can any of the Sony dealers reading the forum confirm this for the HS50?

Unfortunately not, maybe by 2020 we might just have it.
It is mostly from the upscaling of current dvds or xbox as well in my case.

I'm using a HTPC for scaling duties. :)

Why wait for HD DVD, or what ever arrives when they eventually agree on a standard, you can have WMVHD now using a good HTPC you can watch 720p and 1080p movies via you PC :D

Germany have just released 10 or more HD movies in English that play through you PC with windows media player 9 or above and Nvdvd filters

You can use something like that, but i also use hcpc.

Scotty thanks for the link i think i might order a couple of those after Christmas and try them out. The only hidef material i have seen is the T2 trailer on the MS site.

Well, with 576p (output from Denon 3910) into the Sony's HDMI input there are no cropping issues and the PQ is great. In fact, I struggle to see any PQ differences with upconversion to 720p (albeit with cropping) or 1080i.
Then, with HDTV in Australia, we dont have 720p transmissions. I just set my STB to output at 1080i (DVI) into the Sony and all is fine. So at least for me the 720p problem is a non-issue.

Wooty: I agree 100%. The picture from DVD 576p or 480p upscaled by the PJ is excellent. 1080i also looks excellent.

HTPC - Home Theatre PC, or HCPC - Home cinema PC, but basically PC used for playing DVD, TV Music think of it as a home entertainment system.

I’m not an x-box fan but I think you’ll need the high def cable kit (component output) and a game that can output 720p and away you go.

PC high def could take some time to explain, may be quicker do a search on the forums for pc setups

For the xbox, if it is a UK model you will need it chipped and then have to load the enigma video switcher to enable the hidef options. There are not many games that output 720p though so just the MS hidef pack should be suffice if you do not want the hassle of chipping it.

Scooty says, " Why wait for HD DVD, or what ever arrives when they eventually agree on a standard, you can have WMVHD now using a good HTPC you can watch 720p and 1080p movies via you PC ", ok, but how do i go about doing this, is there a guide somwhere ?. Also,My xbox is chipped & i have a enigma video switchdisc, but all it shows is to switch between Pal & NTSC, or will i need the MS hidef pack before the 720p options will show up ?
    Thanks

RIP, you need to go into the MS Dashboard, where you set it to widescreen etc and the options will all be in there.

Martian 1, do a search on this site and you should hopefully find a link, i have had a quick look but cannot find one as there are quite a few threads for enigma alternatively if you check xbox scene out there should be links on there.

The high definition option are only viewable when you have a component connection and source attached to the xbox, otherwise you only get widescreen... options (even on ntsc).

How do you get HD quality from a PC? Do you use 1280 x 720 resolution?

What would happen if I used this resolution with my AE100?

Yes use a high def resolution as your desktop.

Although the AE100 is a 480p projector it is very good at down scaling a 720p picture, although it is not as sharp because you loose the magic 1:1 pixel mapping but it is very smooth and film like. IMHO

It works great with Half Life 2 using the VGA port. I haven’t tried it with a dvi/hdmi cable yet, but VGA is very good (1:1 pixel mapping works very well using the VGA port). Also DVD's look a lot better through the PC than through my crappy old DVD player. :)
