So got SOCOM online, my first impressions ?

    it may be a combination of the following ;

    - already seen online gaming on my big tv [thanks XBL]
    - SOCOM is based on counter strike which means sitting around doing nothing for a while after you have had your ass fragged
    - dont really like the feel of the headset
    - voice is not enabled in the lobbys (this is a must)
    - Ive already fell in love with XBL
    - friends lists ?
    - not that many gamers online
    - no talking in game - well apart from me

that makes me feel a little less than impressed with PS2 online ..

Im just hoping that Sony, or whoever listens to the beta testers get things improved -

    - make more use of voice - its a must in the lobby
    - need a friends list (ability to track friends)
    - will this headset work with all games or just SOCOM (it has SOCOM plastered across it )
    - what have I paid for - is this my years sub or just for this game - lack of information.

I guess Im being a little harsh, I mean if this was my first time seeing online gaming on my big telly, sitting chatting with Mr Reid, I would have been very impressed - as it stands nothing made me go woa - Im sure that will change - perhaps with a racing title, or football title.

Marks out of 10 for the whole experience from ordering to gaming

    6 out 10

For XBL live in beta mode I would have to say 9 out of 10 ..

So I guess it really is 1-0 to Mr Gates ..

    Anyone else ?

Well apart from the fact that you're not supposed to be discussing the beta trials outside the closed forum...

Don't forget this is a trial of the Network gaming, not a trial of the SOCOM Navy Seals game.

Most of your comments are directed at the SOCOM game itself. There is talking in game, but not so common. Don't forget that this is a LIMITED trial so there will not be thousands of people online.

And your £40 has paid for the network adaptor, network SOCOM + headset. There are NO subscription fees for PS2 online gaming.

Personally, I love it and I can't wait for more games to support online play (Resident Evil Online anyone?)

Is the online PS2/Socom trial under NDA? If so I will need to remove this post. Sorry to be a spoilsport but NDAs are important to uphold.

Sony have requested that members do not discuss the trial outside the closed Sony forums, although I don't believe this constitutes an NDA as such.

AVforums are not liable, but Sony have warned people who discuss the trial outside their forum that they may be removed from the trial and their place handed to someone else.

(Of course, there is nothing to prevent my friends who have played SOCOM online from posting their thoughts on it publicly)

hang on - surley the point of a beta is to discuss it - ive tried discussing it inside the ps2 online forums, but ive had about .5 of a response - I respect a lot of the people on these forums, so just wanted to get a few of their opinions - and yes thats all it is - an opinion - mine - I was more impressed in the first 24 hours with XLB than PS2 online - opinion, not fact !!

    oh and I hardly call these closed ;

    http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board?board.id=socom

The more people discuss what they feel is good / bad the quicker we get a more impressive service and game - Im never one to rule something out from day one, always willing to try things until they break, then try them again ... perhaps one of the reasons Im happy to participate in betas ...

I was not disagreeing with anything that you say, and I think that people should be able to discuss things in public. However,
I was merely saying what was said by Sony in their email to trial users :

"Anything related to the trial can be discussed here, but please refrain from discussing anything outside the forum - offenders may be removed from the trial without warning."

It's early days yet and this is the beta test!! Lets hope that by making everyone post on the official site they will have to look at some of the issues - interface, waiting etc.

lets hope they get it right when live

If there is no NDA then there is no problem :)

Post away. I am just a stickler for beta rules as I have done quite a few myself and NDAs are important to uphold as it means there are more betas :)

completly agree - NDAs are there for a reason - not to stop us talking, but just to keep things closed-loop that need to be ..

I agree, lets just hope they get it right, another online games machine is just what I need, and just NOT what I need says the wife :)

There is no NDA, but SOCOM has been out for months in the USA, I imported it.

Whilst the Xbox Live portal feel is far better than the PS-2 for me Xbox Live == Moto GP Live and you can only take so much of that. MS need new titles if it hopes to resign people come November.
For me SOCOM beats Live hands down.

    Neil.

not at all neil. I only have XBL so i cant contribute to comparisons of both platforms.

However, i do disagree with neil - XBL is not just Moto GP wotsoever, i play on Ghost Recon alot more than moto gp and agree at the moment is a better game.

People only mainly play on moto gp is so they can hook up with their mates in a large lobby and have a chat and a occasional race.

I also have NHL which i think is v good, and some of my mates have NBA and apparently that is REALLY good so i may have to get that. so basically i disagree with what u say that XBL is just moto gp!!!

p.s. castle wolfenstein comes out soon :D

I'm with you on this one mate.
We have RTCW & Moto 2 coming in a few weeks plus there are the ones you have just said & Capcom vs snk- unreal ect so live is not just about moto at all.
Live is the best thing to ever hit a console IMHO.
I would only get ps2 online if Pro evo soccer was on it.

Neil have you played Recon on live? it is awsome mate & i do mean awsome :)

Well I really like the sound of SOCOM but for now it's XBLive for me.
Moto is excellent, Ghost Recon is pure class and Unreal isn't bad. :)

You're on your own with that one mate!

We were talking about online console games not pc mate.
Plus you need a pretty expensive pc to run them games i don't :p

I've never played online pc games, so for me xbox live is awsome :)

PS will Halo 2 be online on your pc? if not then i think you'll find xbox will have the best online game ever:smashin:

Back on track - ps2 - I've yet to see a list of games that will be available to play online - yes XBL is great but ps2 may be great its early days yet.

Is there a link to any of these games?

Online games are usually designed to run on low end PCs as well, a lot of the online gaming market is played by people with not very expensive PCs.

Besides I have said before, consoles and PCs both play games, this is the online gaming forum, not my fault that PCs are far better for online gaming than all the consoles :)

As far as PS2 online goes, there is currently Everquest Adventures in the states and FFXI in Japan. Don't know of any other real online titles asides from SOCOM.

Looks like it will - somehow this was unavoidable :boring:

For me I dont really care what the platform is - i have a cube, xbox [online], ps2 [online] N64, PC [online] and a GBA-SP - each one can offer something different depending on the mood - its the games that make the experience - one of the main reasons for me getting PS2 online was just to take in another experience and this indeed was my main reason for being dissapointed first out - ive seen online FPS for ages - that said i think there is defo. a market for ps2 online as long as they look outside the mainstream FPS and perhaps bring out a football title, Forumla one title, or something like that ...

PS2 online for those who already have a console and broadband is only 40quid, which isnt bad considering your getting a game and broadband access - another reason why I decided to go for it.

To me, and perhaps we can wrap this post up from here (fat chance) games win the day and long may they continue :D :D
