saw this technique in what digital camera a few months ago and thought I'd try it on this vintage tractor.

Sure. It was used quite effectively on a sunset in the tut.

1. Convert to black and white (eg desaturate or use channel mixer or other preferred method). Duplicate. Layer blend mode to multiply, opacity 30%.
2. Adjust levels to your satisfaction then flatten. New adjustment layer - colour balance.
3. select shadows, drag yellow/blue to right and cyan/red to left and apply changes. New colour balance layer - highlights in tone balance section, yellow/blue to left, cyan/red to right, apply and double click
4. go to blend if section, pull down blue, go to This Layer, adjust sliders to desired effect. Burn shadow areas that need it.
