I'm not too hot on firewire cards, but I don't believe there *should* be much of a difference between cards...(from a PC perspective) i.e. They're all at the same spec, right?

The only real difference between firewire cards is if there are hardware CODECs onboard.
Standard firewire cards are all the same and do not have the CODECs onboard. These cost from around £20.
Hardware CODEC cards give the likes of real time output of effects and cost several hundred pounds up.

To start with you will be better off saving the extra amount and just getting a basic card from the likes of DABS or EBUYER or any other cheap retailers/computer fairs.

I also have a dell 4300 and installed a firewire card about 6 months ago. Just buy the cheapest one available!!!
I got mine at dabs.com for £13. although they seem to have hiked the prices up since then. I am presuming you have win xp.
If not, I'm not sure how easily firewire cards can be installed.

A very popular programme for editing is Pinnacle Studio 8.
This easy to learn, but has loads of advanced features.
