At the risk of sounding reel boring (it is 1.30am and I'm an insomniac) I have got the upgrade bug recently and thought I would try Firefox as my internet browser instead of Explorer.

The thing is - I don't get it. What is so good about Firefox. Having downloaded it, the screen looks kind of dull and doesn't seem to offer anything exciting at all.

Unless someone can elighten me I think I will go back to Explorer or some other browser (when I get bored again).

    :boring:

    Tabs.

Press Ctrl-t and experience the tabbing goodness.

Security, plugins, extensions, tabs, interface, configurability, RSS client, integrated searches, pop-up blocking, not MS (if that bothers you). All without using every resource available on your computer. :)

IMHO firefox doesn't hold a candle to Opera. That is the best browser out there by a country mile.

Grab the Noia 2 Extreme theme and check out some of the extensions.

It takes a bit of getting used to but it's worth it.

One of the other advantages is security. Firefox has far fewer unpatched security holes than IE. I only use IE now for Windows Update and the odd site that's been written specifically for IE and won't work in FF (which is very few of them now).

Other than security I must say I dont like firefox - though opera is ok (I like the mouse movement back and forward facility). I dont get why people like tabbed windows - 1 you cant alt tab between them where as I can between seperate windows and you can always group your windows together anyway which is almost the same but alt-tab still works

People mustn't forget that it's possible to have multiple FF windows open which contain multiple tabs so if Alt+tab is a necessity then it's still possible and more flexible.

Middle-click on a link in FF will open it in a new tab. Middle-click on a tab in FF will close that tab. :smashin:

I find the tab system much more preferable over multiple explorer windows and once you're used to it really does change how you browse information from multiple sites.

I use the weather, foxy tunes, calandar and dictionary extensions

I've tried others and like the way you can just uninstall an extension thats not for you.

The themes are great fun, again, download and try. If you don't like uninstall try another. I current have a wooden theme which I wish I could extend to the entire XP OS :)

I also like little touches like the find functionality and shortcut customisations.

I've not tried Opera, but I've heard good things, potentially a quicker browser than FF and IE apparently.

Opera is definitely slightly quicker, but I still much prefer Firefox..
IE is the first thing I uninstall after building a new PC..

Ok. Just tried the tab thing and yep - that is pretty good. Much better than the half dozen explorer windows I normally have open.

Ok, so I'm stuck with firefox for a while now and will try some of the themes etc.

Don't know how all of this helps me run my business :boring: but it beats watching endless soaps with the missus :D

    If so, what happened?

It just highlights "untitled" and the screen below remain blank .The right hand box is whatever webpage I happen to be in and the left one is my home page - in this case Google, all the rest just have untitled

They're untitled until you type a URL in the dialog box or visit a bookmark (in both cases, while one of your "untitled tabs" is "active". The idea is that you can browse multiple sites at one time without having to open seperate windows.

See the image below for an idea - I have six sites open concurrently.

EDIT - Bugger. Apparently I can't seem to upload the image. Hopefully the description will be enuff.

Another cool variation on the same idea: multiple homepages. Just open up all the sites you regularly check out each morning with that first cup of coffee, go into Options > General, and select "Use Current Pages". Firefox will store all the open tabs as home pages, so next time you open your browser, all the pages you want to see will open in separate tabs. It's particularly useful if you use various webmail accounts (Yahoo, G Mail, Hotmail, etc.) - you can check 'em all out in one go, and the password storing thing means you don't have to type a thing if you don't want to.

I do something similar to cmcg55 above with my favourite forum sites (like this one) to make them quicker & easier to read:

Go to the mail AV Forums forum page.

Middle click on all the forums you read regularly to open each one in a new tab.

When you've opened all of the forums you're interested in, go to Bookmarks, then "Bookmark This Page". Check the "Bookmark all tabs in a folder" option. That will save the exact layout.

Add that set off bookmarks to your bookmark toolbar.

Then, with two clicks you can click on AV Forums, then "Open in Tabs" to open everything in one go.

yeah I've been using firefox since v 1.02

only what 4 updates? In contrast to Windows Update bugging me to install 7 updates released on the 1st of each month for something I don't use no more

yes, its not as popular but....

I did try to persuade ICT teacher at college before Summer hols to change, but apparently Microsoft won't let them due to all the Microsoft stuff they have
