I have ordered this, on the basis of it being an anamorphic transfer, as it a fave of mine. I already own the existing version but will upgrade as it is just so damn good.

Have checked on the universal website and they state that the release is anamorphic!!!

It will be anamorphic but, it won't have any new extras. It will have the same extras from the current release. Therefore, I am sticking with the current version.

yes, the press release stated it's anamorphic. RRP is only $14.95 too, so you should be able to pick it up online for around £7 or less

For six or seven quid I think I will upgrade as the new transfer alone for a classic is, in my opinion, a bargin.

I've been told a new enhanced transfer and it's coming out on R2 too.
DVD Soon don't have it up as yet, once they do it's bought.
The Anamorphic print is a must for fans.

Still waiting for The Thing 2 (if ever).

    Also known as "Things"

You should give the recently released xbox/pc game a spin instead. Its pretty good!

Love the movie too. I'm pretty happy with my current R2 version, so will only "upgrade" if the transfer is mind-blowing

Got the Xbox game but haven't played it as I'm getting a Xbox soon (possibly this weekend after the price drop).

Anamorphic is the way to go and at that price you just can't say no.

Whish they would do a DVD version with the mentioned TV ending. It would be nice to see it.

My information is that not only will this version be anamorphic ( thus increasing picture quality ) but it will carry a DTS soundtrack and all the old extras.

Given the amount of extras on the original, wouldn't adding dts kind of impair the pic quality? Surely they'd have to do a major compression job to fit everything that's been there before (over 3 hours of film/making of doc + all the other xtras), a commentary, DD5.1 and dts? Could mean, although anamorphic, the new transfer might not look a whole lot better than the last one.
That's the first I've heard of dts though, so I'm sceptical of that being on there

Universal website makes no mention of DTS on the specks (for region 1 at least)

Compression and mastering techniques of films have come on a long way since this film was released in the late nineties, they can fit DTS on it on no problem, the original release had the full soundtrack as a bonus option hidden in the menu system, theyre probably drop that to fit DTS on the disc and it only needs to peak at 8mb/s to get great picture quality, they managed that with Blade in Japan so they can do that over here, with 2 layers on the disc a 107 minute film should fit fine and look great.

I got my information from DVD Debate i think but since then i haven't seen DTS mentioned again ( its still worth upgrading with or without DTS ) i suppose it might not be included but i hope it is.

The DTS would be the icing on the cake, but with or without, I'll certainly be getting the anamorphic version. A true masterpieice of brilliant special effects, suspense and atmosphere.

What? Note even the fact that the picture quality will be improved considerably in anamorphic!

Not necessarily true... I've got plenty of terrible anamorphic transfers and non-anamorphic ones which are superior...

...they are dumping all of this on a single disc, not even shunting the extras over onto a second, so it's gonna get awful cramped on that disc...

...and that new cover's disgusting, btw. Truly dire.

I will wait for reviews. I am very happy with the transfer of the original R2. Also, even though I like the film very much. I don't like buying films more than once on DVD.

None anamorphic discs on a large screen don't look too hot! So for me the anamorphic transfer would make me replace the old one (if I had the old one).

EDIT: hahahahaa I was just moving my collection from my ex's to mine today and I noticed I do in fact have the old one after all!! :suicide:

According to reports on some sites...
Fans of the thing should get hold of the new Criterion release of VideoDrome as it has a Deleted scene from the Thing on it that ISNT on the Thing dvd. The scene in included in the roundtable docu at the end.

Just sold my old copy for £5 so just a few quid to add to get the new release.

Must agree that the new cover is crap. I've always prefered the UK video release that had the Blair monster on the front.

cool, it's been in the post a few days so hopefully I'll be watching that soon. :smashin:

I always thought there must be much more deleted scenes than are on The Thing disc as what's there just adds up to about a minute of footage.
    Cool news.
