Help me make a decision please, any reason to spend 459 on 5050 as opposed to 399 on G3.Cameras seem to make you spend twice your budget don't you think.

Olympus is £430 according to uk.pricerunner.com.

However, I'd take the Canon at £399. It's a close thing but I seem to remember the Olympus having a few chromatic (purple fringing) issues. On top of that I believe the Canon's layout/controls are more logical. The C5050 has more pixels though - swings and round-abouts.

    Check both on www.dpreview.com.

Then go and try each out and see which you prefer the feel of.

To be honest, you won't go wrong with either.

One final thought - if you feel you are spending too much then why not check out the Olympus C4000 at £280 ish - it's a fine camera. Similarly, if you don't mind a slower lens then what about the Canon S45 at £330 or so?

    Matt.

Matt, you are without doubt,a very proper geezer, thanks. The thing about spending too much money is because I am completely ignorant about this field.Even if you gave me the best cam in world I will only be able to take snaps.Thing is , like many before I am sure,I don't want to waste money on camera I will outgrow. And when I look at the two cameras mentioned,I want to touch them, and hold them, they are just so tempting.Cheers mate.

G3. I prefer canon. I've got the G2 which I'm more than happy with.

G3 is a great camera, I got one when I outgrew my point-and-click Kodak 4900.

You won't outgrow the G3, it's fantastic and at current prices a real bargain.
