having boldy stated at work that there couldn't be more than half a dozen films where the sequel was better than the original I came unstuck when asked to name them.

Terminator 2 was the only obvious one that I could think of although someone suggested Toy Story 2 which I haven't seen.

    Any more ideas ?

    Hi,

Most people would recommend the following:

    1) Godfather - Part 2
    2) Aliens
    3) Mad Max 2 (aka The Road Warrior)
    4) Terminator 2 (although that's debateable, as they are both superb)
    5) Superman II

That's all I can think of, right now!

Don't forget 'The Empire Strikes Back'. Easily the best of the Star Wars films. Sequels are thought less of really because they don't have as much innovation or novelty. The best sequels are those that differe significantly from the originals. Instead of having the same old ignorant rich people, dinosaurs and people eating over and over again.

I would agree to most but not Aliens, the first part was and is IMHO the best. The James Bond movies don't count, they are rather independent movies featuring the same character but not real sequels as the story and opponent usually are totally different.

In fact it seems sequels are not that well accepted, as you said usually it's nothing really new and some movies should have never had any sequel made (Highlander for example).
And all those 'let's cash in on the some ol' and boring story' are usually just rubbish ("I know what you ..." blabla ...).

Then again I think it's quite difficult to make a better sequel if the original movie was already a great success.

So should we have high or low expectations for Blade2, Matrix2&3, Terminator3, Titanic2, etc. ... ?

Titnaic 2; I bet it sinks again.
Terminator 3; A metal robot thingy will save the day and say "i`ll be back"
Matrix 2&3; Same storyline as the first film but with different special fx, but will have a brilliant soundtrack.
Can`t wait for leathal weapon 5.

The Matrix was a Messiah film. Neo fulfilled his potential by the end of the movie so they can't use this story line again for 2 & 3.
If they do then they all suck, otherwise I can't wait to see what they come up with as a challenge to now presumably almighty Neo.

I'm sincerely hoping that Blade 2 will rock just as much as the first (possibly my favourite film of all time).

The reason I think Blade 2 should be good is cos they were talking about it while making the original Blade (just like they did on the Matrix)...I also believe that Blade was to be a trilogy also.

Anybody got any news on Blade 2?

Oh....BTW - apparently Mad Max 4 is being seriously talked about at the moment, as long as they make it more like Mad Max 2 than Mad Max 3, I'll be a happy bunny. ;)

I'm surprised that no one has questioned the merits of Superman II over the first film. I had really fond memories of the second film from when it came out, but having watched both of them a couple of years ago, the second one is awful in comparison. The three super villains (well Zod and the bird) are good, but absolutely nothing else...

I personally prefer Daleks! Invasion Earth 2150AD to its prequel but will cheerfully admit that both of them are crap.

Godfather II is really "more of the same, you lucky people" but I will certainly agree that Toy Story 2 is better than the first.

As for T2 - well its a very good film, but better than the first? Not sure - both have their merits.

How about Wrath of Khan being better than The Motion Picture, or First Contact being better than Generations? I must admit that whilst TMP isnt the "cowboys in space" that the later Trek films were, it does have a stylistic presence which makes it quite enjoyable.

By all accounts, the storyline chosen for "Judge Dredd" wasn't the best available. They saved that for the sequel. Because the first film "bombed" (largely because of an unfortunately timed release which coincided with.....I can't remember, but it was big), the sequel hasn't been made. But there's talk.........

 Uh, that was IMHO one of those sequels which just try to cash in of the earlier success with way too much SFX. I liked the first one though.
