Thanks for the review Steve! Sounds like it's an interesting new addition to the franchise, looking forward to watching it over the weekend.

Saw this at midnight and loved it, pacing wise, it is long film but it didn’t seem to drag forand the film passed quickly. I had been in the cinema for an imax force awakening / last Jedi double bill so it was a long night No spoilers but there was a few surprises too and I don’t know where they are going to take the story from here.

I'll go over Christmas... at some point.

Done the midnight thing for The Force Awakens which I really enjoyed. Saw Rogue One opening weekend and it was okay (still haven't watched my BD of it, I can't get the enthusiasm to sit through it again).

For me, 7/10 is low. An easy 8 or 9 though the the 9 might get dropped upon a second viewing

The middle bit didn’t drag, but it’s a slow set up. I’m sure some will have more issues with it, like Steve, a slow chase through space with an annoying
Until we know her real motive and see her win Leia interim captain
      .

Fans can and will still strip this bare I’m sure but frankly dear, I don’t give a damn. I loved it and Kylo improved a massive amount for me in this film inc the has he or hasn’t he turned culminating with his fight
      with Ray

I don’t now what film Steve was watching but I thought it had PLENTY of humour. BB-8 having plenty of his share of funny scenes.

The 3D was mostly horrid for me. Some good scenes but far too many times it made the effects look terrible (I’m hoping that’s the reason). Can’t wait for my 2D viewing.

Ray has me completely hooked. I just thinks she’s brilliant and has some great face to face lines with Luke. Luke’s attitude in the beginning was a fine way to keep him in this film and the whole training theme was cleverly masked from Empire. Sure some sword play etc mimicked what we have seen before, come on what else were we going to get?

So no way is this a 7 from me. I enjoyed far more than either of the last two new films. It will stand up for far better repeat viewing than TFA and was a much better sewn together film than R1 which felt an utter mess to me.

      Loved it.

Early reviews of this are surprisingly kind IMO. I went with two mates, who are also life long Star Wars fans, and we all agreed it was (for us) shockingly bad. I was due to see it again tomorrow, but there is no chance of that now. It has pretty much killed the franchise for me.

      Currently giving this a 5/10
Life long Star wars fan and i just did not like the tone of the film at all. Pacing was all over the place. Thought the main characters were great, one of the new ones, the girl..terrible .

I didn't say there wasn't any humour, there are some laugh-out-loud moments, but none of the witty banter that I enjoyed in TFA. There's a lot of slapstick involving BB8, never my favourite kind of humour, and a couple of very cheap jokes that for me just diminished what had gone before.

8.5 for me I think ... some nice touches to the storyline and some great battle scenes ... but cgi characters seemed gratuitous merchandise opportunities and some of the humour seemed very GoTG-influenced and didn't sit right ... could have done with more/deeper 'missing' Luke story as otherwise seemed to
replicate Obi-Wan on Tatooine beating himself up over Anakin/Darth failure
and no further clue as to
where/how Luke's light sabre got to Maz

      Smile moments
R2D2's 'cheap shot' hologram on the Falcon
The fire every (AT-AT) gun we've got aftermath

      but the
Leia not dying in space (well the superwoman flight back bit) felt weird ?

Anyway will go back for second viewing - hopefully Science Museum 70mm 2D sometime over xmas/new year break

One thing I will say is that the cinematography for TLJ is stunning.

It's mostly great but I found many of the comedy moments to be really forced and unfunny, like Ghostbusters remake forced and unfunny. Those moments really took me out of the movie and spoiled it for me. Steve's review is spot on.

Well I guess we have to disagree!

For me Rogue One made me feel I liked TFA more than I had before.

TLJ has me recalling that TFA was pretty lame for so much of the film and very fearful for IX

I know after a few minutes that i was not going to like it, for those who have seen it lets take this one scene in...
Rey in TFA the scene where she finds Luke's lightsaber for the first time, brings back flashbacks, this was Superb imo....
      Cut to TLJ ....
She hands Luke the Saber.... He throws it over his shoulder... and it lands by some cute disney Porgs

I think this was going to be an issue with using different directors for each film. Second director doesn’t like something the first director did and then completely disregards things that are built up in the first film.

Personally I felt Rian was quite happy to bump off Phasma and Snoke when I think they could have built up more

Saw a midnight screening and I would agree with the review score, had bits I liked very much and bits that would have been best left on the cutting room floor and while I like a bit of humour they seemed to be approaching GotG levels of slapstick which really seemed out of place, watched TFA yesterday evening so it was fresh in my mind and I would say that was the stronger film but it was good to finally get some time with Luke and
my wish that Yoda would make an appearance was granted :)

It was good but headline tags I read saying it was better than Empire, yea I don’t think so lol

Oooh forgot that one. Yeah that was the shark jumping scene. A very poor decision
i never felt like Leia has ever possessed the force the way Luke did. So for her to survive and fly in space was way OTT

There will never be a Star Wars film that will please everyone it is impossible. the debate of people loving it or hating it actually has me more excited to see it. From what I gather so far it looks amazing has some wow moments and the best battles seen in the entire franchise so that sounds great and I'm glad they have taken risks with the story. We moan TFA was safe and we moan when it takes risks we are a hard bunch to please lol.

It at least showed and lead onto the fact that we will get a new kind of Star Wars trilogy from Rian Johnson.

I sure some will compare one scene to The Matrix Re-Loaded, but at least we got a hint that not everything in this film or Rian's future films has to "be" Star Wars as we know it.

Heh heh, harsh but fair. My biggest issue was that it wasn't even remotely earned. It came from nowhere.

ooooph the more I think about it the more I hate it. But not enough to effect my overal feelings towards the film. But hey a second viewing might bring up more issues for me. I dont think it will, I hope.

I haven't cared for either of the new Disney productions & this was no exception. I imagine if you enjoyed TFA and Rogue One then you'll be a fan of this. How much you'll enjoy it will probably come down to what you think of Rian Johnson's interpretation of Luke Skywalker.

In its defence it's not quite the beat for beat remake of an older Star Wars movie the previous episode was. However, it does have a remarkably similar structure to 'The Empire Strikes Back'. It also features no lightsaber battle, one of the slowest (and dullest) space chases I've ever seen and, in a first for the franchise, pro-vegetarian propaganda. Wasn't expecting that.
