I hated the original so if this "is not as good as it's predecessor" then I think I'll be giving it a wide berth.

I loved the first one, watched it a few times in 3d also, but watching just the trailers for the new one didn't look quite engaging and now this review :)
Going to wait until it comes out on Netflix?:)

I saw this last night. Six is a generous score. The script and acting are atrocious. I echo the review of Spinal Tap's Shark Sandwich album:"sh*t sandwich".

loved the first one but the trailers looked to me like they fell for the "if one or two jaegers were good the seven or eight will be great" - looked like just another transformers flick from the trailer and the original was so much more than that - give it a miss - see ready player one over easter instead for me

I'm probably going to be in the minority here but here it is:
I actually preferred this to the first and I do like the first one too. I didn't have high hopes for this so I didn't go to the IMAX. But I think a review I read got it right when it said that it wasn't trying to pretend that it was anything more than battling giant robots.
The initial scenes where we see the first Jaeger built by the girl which then meets a "real" Jaeger. I loved that scene!.
Jaegers vs AI Jaegers vs Kaijus. What? And you want a story too? Asking a bit much there aren't we LoL :)

When it tried to get a little serious? That is when it got a little silly to be honest. Its just a stupid dumb rock'em sock'em slugfest with Jaegers and Kaijus and no-one is more surprised than me that I enjoyed it so much. 7/10.

Agreed but it's not 7 or 8 Jaegers as such. It's a little more "subtle" (and I use that word advisedly here) than that.

I've got free tickets to see Ready Player One tomorrow. Happy Days!

Got what I wanted from it: big robots fighting big monsters on a big screen. I quite liked the little

      villain twist

      too.

Sometimes I just want visual effects eye candy.

Yeah in retrospect I should have seen it coming.
This film reminds me of why I like the Matrix Reloaded. Yes the Matrix is the "better" film, but Reloaded is more fun.

Not reallya patch on the original, but I was expecting that. The original had me grinning from ear to ear the first time I saw the Jeagers fighting the Kaijus, but this left me pretty cold. Weak plot with a predictable twist, lacking the atmosphere, big name actors and score of del Toro's film, but at least the CG was good. Too much pandering to the Chinese market as well, as is becoming the norm.

Oh, The Matrix Reloaded is great. Okay, so it's a bit pretentious, but it at least tries to raise some interesting questions and has the best set pieces in the trilogy. I actually watched it last night and I'm planning on doing Revolutions in a bit.

It's funny but I think you hit the nail on the head for Revolutions. But to "me" this is similar, not as good but similar. I know I will probably have the minority opinion about this film but I just found it big dumb fun.

As for the Chinese market pandering, right now it's almost as if there is a part in every script these days that just says "insert Chinese bit here".

Certainly more well known actors. In addition to Elba you had Charlie Hunnam, Ron Pearlman and Rinko Kikuchi (nominated for an Oscar no less) in pretty major roles. This really only had JB, unless you're a big Jing Tian fan, so it had a little more star power than the sequel.

Doesn't sound like a great test subject for celebrity verification- like asking the Amish what their favourite streaming service is.

Loved the original, because it took its time to give you those exciting build-up moments and YEAH !! action sequences, and it worked, especially with the soundtrack. It didn't feel specifically like a kids film. This however, firstly looks horrible on IMAX 3D, and secondly has been turned into a weak Transformers, throw everything at the screen in one mess and hope something sticks. It's as if they just totally released the handbrake and thought, what the heck. It takes ages to get going though, a full 30 minutes before anything worthy happens. The introduction of a teen Jeager pilot is a woeful and desperate change in direction that really doesn't work for me. It's like giving a mouthy kid control of Thunderbird 2 for heaven's sake (showing my age LOL).

      Agreed.
The intro of the Teen Jaeger pilot was stupid, the story was stupid, when it tried to get serious it was stupid............and I loved "almost" every minute of it LoL :)

I can see why people compare it to Bayformers but in all honesty I enjoyed it far more than all of them bar the first one.
Yes the plot was a stupid but the action sequences were great. I think I enjoyed it more as I would look over at my son who was grinning and acting out the moves as they happened, imagine being a kid and watching a film like this at the cinema. Its like Robotjox but better.

I thought the original was a steaming pile of freshly laid brown stuff, and I wish the whole CGI superhero / monster / machine fighting genre would just go away..

I will avoid this like a Russian talcum powder in Salsbury.

I used to go to the Cinema may once every 2-3 years. Now with "the whole CGI superhero / monster / machine fighting genre" I have been to the cinema more in last year and a bit than I previously went in total.

      Sorry :)

Went to see this the other night, I'll be honest I had low hopes having seen the trailer.
But... I thought it was Great! and far better than what the trailer led me to expect. Lots of fun and perhaps even better paced than the original.
Definitely a worthy sequel, and if you liked the first you really ought to see this film.
I'll definitely be picking it up just as soon as it comes out on disc.

Btw mentioning Transformers in the same breath as this is doing this film a major disservice, it's far Far FAR better than that tosh.;)

^ storywise I thought PR:U was the last two Transformers films combined. Surprised no one else has picked up on this.
