Watched Fight Club last night, the first time since I saw it on the cinema. Still a brilliant film, but my wife and brother hated it, citing too much violence and a plot that did not hang together. I had trouble understanding their viewpoint. Is this a film a bit like art in terms of the way it initiates different reactions or is there something deeper going on here. Comments

The words "Modern Classic" spring to mind

"Just might require another viewing" NY Times

I think that sums it up really. Like Blade Runner, Memento, 12 Monkeys, you pick up more of the detail on repeat viewings. Great film, Great DVD (2 disk version)

Personally I think it's one of the best movies of the last few years. It certainly didn't deserve to get the producers sacked from Fox when the film failed to turn a profit and Rupert Murdoch couldn't bring himself to see the funny side.
It gets better with repeated viewings, you always notice something new.

A fantastic movie but movies are an art form so different strokes for different folks.

Squirrel God i notice you have the limited edition in your collection, it there any nice extras?

sorry forgot to tell you im talking about Memento not Fight Club, do'h.

D

I think it is a great film. Esp. the ending - a bit of a surprise there if you still have to watch it.

I think it would've been a little better with out that 30sec pumelling of the guy on the floor. I mean more universally watchable.

My wife wouldn't watch it because she knew there'd be fighting, and now I've seen it I know that just because of that small segment, she's right to avoid it.

Isn't the Uk DVD/Video version cencored at that point? I know the version on Sky isn't but had heard that it was different from the video version

Maybe, I did watch an R1 version.

I'll check at a dvd compare site re. the R2/UK release thanks - I'd like to watch it again WITH the misses.

Loads of nice extras mate, including a lovely ability to play the movie backwards ;) Well worth upgrading!

R2 UK is censored by 4 seconds, plus they substituted some dialogue and other stuff elsewhere in the movie so that's another 3 seconds, making 7 seconds in total. R1 and R4 are okay, R2 UK should be avoided like the plague IMO.

sorry couldn't resist:blush:

Any chance of adhering to the original thread, which if you recall was a discussion about the film:rolleyes:

discuss.

great film....

and please forgive this karkus

i just wish the sensors would shove their scissors up their big fat arses when will these people realise there is an off switch on all TVs

We should be able to decide ourselves, i do not need some relic telling me what i can and can not watch

they just cut a few seconds here and there just to justify their overpaid salary

As most who know me are aware, this is easily my favorite film. For real insight, read the book by Chuck Palanhuik, his debut, which tells you a bit more about why Tyler does what he does. the film couldn't have cast the characters better though, Pitt is Tyler. Fantastic movie, the violence is needed to put across the message properly and isn't shocking IMO

Gambit, what do you think the message is ?

This film had a profound effect on my wife, she hated it and found it very disturbing, particularly the violence. This is the second time she has watched it and her opinion has'nt changed.

I only see the violence as an expression of impotent rage, the struggle within etc.

Its a remarkable film, for me its a bit like music, you listen to a wild mash of guitar drums and distortion, but hear the underlying melody and your hooked, others just cant stand the noise.

The message is described better in the book- middle american men, raised by their mothers cause their fathers left when they were young have never been in a fight, and will die with perfect corpse etc... Plus, they're being blamed for all the foul ups in the past i.e. pollution, global warming etc and therefore can't do things that they could in the past, and feel mad about this (this is Tyler's reason for project Mayhem) and so want to shake things up a lot. Read the book for a far more eloquent and well structured argument and then you'll understand why a) I love this book/ film so much and b) why Tyler is god.:D

I didn't find Fight Club overly violent at all. I could understand why the ladies out there might find it so but to me, it's nothing more than bare-knuckle boxing. The characters involved in the fight scenes have a degree of respect for each other and never is there any deep hatred or visciousness - apart from the one scene were Ed Norton goes to town on Leto.

I think movies such as Goodfellas/Casino to name but two, are far more violent and graphic yet are regarded as more mainstream or watchable by many. I watched Death Wish last night on BBC1 and had forgotton just how shocking the rape/murder scene is portrayed, especially as the violence was directed towards women.

One of the key points forgotten by most is that the Fight Club it's self is a environment where the guys can fight in a controlled way and get thier rage without someone putting the boot in, so to speak:D
