There is a superbit region 1 version of this also.
Dolby Digital and DTS, but no features on it.

The British R2 has (Edit: Too My Eyes) excellent picture and DD sound.

The R1 Superbit is supposed to be amazing in both sound and PQ.

    Hi

The R1 Superbit version is superb, both for picture and sound quality (Dolby & DTS 5.1 tracks). There is a DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 version (R2) available from Germany but the picture quality is not supposed to be as good as the R1 versions.

    Beg to differ

R2 has a poor picture quality and early version were high jitter poor transfers (outside DVD spec). Has been re pressed

R1 has class leading picture quality that is miles better than the R2 version. Chalk and cheese.

R1 Superbit is better again and with that lovely DTS track which is subtly better. DD tracks are all pretty similar.

What is it with people picking holes on this site.

To my eyes the R2 copy I have looks and sounds excellent. Maybe I have a repressed one, but what would I know.

Everyone I have shown it to has said WOW. Go for the Superbit.

I am glad you are happy. There were so many 'issues' with the R2 disc that some top players refused to play the disc, even with the repressing there is no a big difference in picture quality. I have all three discs mention (not the German one) and am therefore able to make comparison on all three discs objectively. You?;)

It was widely reported on this site and one contibutor (Neil / Jenz) actually did an excellent comparison r1 / r2 with pictures for all to see. It was on his now defunct bullets and babes dvd site. There was a wide comment on this site.

I bow to your opinion and three disk comparison. I only have the R2 but I am happy with it, substandard picture et all.:) I have no plans to replace it but if I did I would go for the superbit version.

If the standard R1 is better it must truly be stunning.

I would Hope the superbit was better still in picture and sound or what would be the point.

Maybe I took your "beg to differ comment" in the wrong way but I was only giving my opinion. Their has been a lot of nit picking over tiny details lately (not by yourself).

    It is. :)

If you are interested I would be happy to post all three disc to you to 'play' with. It is quite interesting but a little geeky.

PM me if you are interested.

Agree with you wider 'picky' comments.

I did a comparision review looking at the R2 and Superbit release, and while I didn't go into any "technical" details, the review speaks for itself..... look here

My UK R2 looks great to me (I suspect I have a repress though as I bought it only about 6 weeks ago)! I haven't compared it with any of the other regions, but it's far from disappointing picture and sound quality! Got it for a tenner from play.com and worth every penny :)

I think what it could be is the picture looks fine on a widescreen TV's. It's probably when you use a projector or large screen rear projection TV the image shows it's faults.

Thats a very good call for all those without R1 capable machines. They also sell Superbit versions of Gattaca, Godzilla, Crouching Tiger and Deperado (well, and Johnny Mnemonic but I don't class that as a film). Strange packaging though - nowhere near as nice as the R1 or English R2).

    Tee,

The packaging is a transparant plastic disc-holder, surrounded with mirror-finish card-board. And this is put into a transparant sleeve on which the info is printed... I don't know how to describe it any better. Weird but true, the discs themselves are purple.

There are also Dutch/English versions (instead of French/English versions) of all the R2-superbit films you mentioned (including Johnny Mnemonic).
Except for the fifth element... Couldn't tell you why though.

Since we Dutch-speaking folk don't want everything translated for us, these Dutch/English versions at least have the original, non-translated title on the case.

    Hi Whatts,

    a couple of questions:

Do all the releases have removeable subttitles?
In the specs it states that each disc contains a trailer - is this true?

    Thanks in advance :)

    Tee,

I've made a habit of buying and not watching discs so I can't be 100% sure but... If I'm not mistaking, the discs are the same for both the French/English and Dutch/English cases.
So I think they have removable subs (French and Dutch).

Don't know about the trailer though. The spec sheets on www.dvdzone2.com aren't always 100% reliable, so I'll let you know as soon as I've checked my copies of Desperado and Johnny Mnemonic (yes I know, it's not a real movie...)

    i have had
    r1 normal +superbit
    r2 uk + german

and i have got to say that the german version is definetly the best, picture and sound wise (and there are tons of extras though mostly in german!) the ES track is matrix not discrete as advertised though(might just be mine though!) i would post examples of the quality but i ended up selling the german for £30! the easiest place to get it from is amazon as the layout is the same as the UK version!

    Tee,

I checked my Johnny Mnemonic and Desperado Superbits.
The Dutch/English Superbit versions have optional subs in Dutch and French. Audio is DTS, Dolby Surround (both English) and Dolby Digital (French).
    No sign of a trailer.
As far as I know, the Dutch discs themselves are exactly the same as the French versions.

I picked up a French Superbit Fifth Element 'cos it looked cool in the slim case (I have the Reg 1 already) but to make it clear the French Superbit only has English DTS and Dolby Surround and not DD 5.1 (that's why the guy sold it to me in the first place)..:) Good for me, only cost me a tenner..;)

I have the German R2 disk and on my tosh 18zp36 the picture looks great and the sound (Kef kht2005, denon 3802) is very clear and strong. Opening scene with the Star Wars style space ship entrance is a peach.

Some of the extras are in german but many are in English.

If any of you are keen to own the German R2 then pm me an offer as I 'might' be tempted to sell it.

    Regards

I've also watched the R2 version and find the picture quality more than acceptable.
