    In my experience:

UPS ALWAYS charge VAT/duties immediately - THEY implement the charges themselves & pass them on to HM C&E.

Fedex - always likely to implement at a later date

DHL - not as bad as Fedex. I'm reliably told 1/3 chance of being "charged".

This from >15 non EU imports over the last 6/8 months.

Just rec'd my latest note from Fedex.

    Demand for almost €65

Stuff from the US arrived 22/11/02, cost approx $210 inc. shipping. Today 23/01/03, invoice for VAT €53.98 & "admin charges" €8.71.

    So just over 2 months.

Lovely big white A4 envelope though - they are nice.

When I ordered my Norh speakers DHL phoned me to say they were in the country and did I know there'd be customs charges.

Oh and that customs had decided to open one to have a look.

I wonder, why would customs open a large parcel from Thailand? :D
