Ive been looking at getting a Philips Pronto universal remote control for many months, but the high cost in the UK has been holding me back from making a purchase. For example the TSU9400 model is currently retailing for around £700 and the larger TSU9400 model is currently retailing for around £1,000.
In addition if you wanted to control your devices without having direct line of site you would also need to purchase a wireless extender, for example the Philips RFX9400 retailing for around £250. A number of forum members have previously imported the Philips Pronto remote controls from the USA, but the weakening of the exchange rate has eroded most the potential saving and introduces potential warranty issues should the remote control develop a fault.
Even the much more basic and less flexible Logitech Harmony 1100 remote control is currently retailing for over £300, which prompted me to explore the potential of the Apple iPod / iPhone / iPad...
I am designing my family/home theater room for my new house. I'd like to get good surround sound (5.1) for movies (mostly) but I also want to keep the room as neat as possible.
I was thinking about in-wall speakers, but it seems most people use these for surround sound only. Aren't there any good in-wall speakers that can be used for front and center?
Another thing I was thinking about is to use "normal" speakers and conceal them inside furniture. Any ideas of the best ways to do this?
My budget for speakers would be about $3000-4000.
A message to all members,if you would like to leave 1 picture of your home cinema set-up for other to see,no replying in this section, but please leave a link to your own gallery if you want.
many thanks to mabo for approving this.
Lets compile a complete list of manufacturers of home cinema speaker systems available to buy over the counter in the UK.
The speakers must be auditionable before you keep them.
So they must be available from shop or by mail order with a full money-back guarantee. And they must be designed for use as complete 5.1 (or 6.1/7.1) setups.
Please reply with additions which I will edit in.
We are now taking comments from owners. Please reply here with your exact configuration and experiences owning these speakers..
I decided this weekend to try and quieten my PC by following some other members lead and going down the water cooling road. The fans on my PC were really starting to drive me mad
The first thing that I did was to remove all the fans. The one on the processor and graphics card were no problem but the one in the power unit was a bugger to get out.
The most difficult part was sealing all the ventilitation openings in the PC case with silicon. I also put silicon all around the joints on the PC case. The smell of silicon was dreadful but when my wife complained I told her to be patent as it will be worth it when we have a completely silent PC.
Because I had completely sealed the PC case the only opening near top was the DVD drive. So I opened that and put the small hose I had purchased specially for the job into the DVD drive as far as it would go. With what I can only describe as great excitement and anticipation, I turned on the water. It really is amazing just how long...
I was wondering have you spotted anything that happens in the movies or on TV that just does not happen in real life, such as:
1 When it lighting it always thunders at the exact same time.
2 If you fall in a river etc. you can dry out in minutes.
3 If a car hits an other it end up flying through the air (in real life they just crumple).
4 They catch fire instantly.
5 Ancient skeletons stay in one piece (in real life the cartilage between the bones would rot quick).
6 You can out run an explosion.
7 You can out run a machine gun.
8 If you jump at a window it will smash an allow you to pass through the opening.
9 The glass will not cut you.
10 A glass bottle will smash if you hit some one over the head with it.
11 Computers always display in big letters.
12 You can crack into an other secure system in minuets.
