Faulty Yamaha RXV765?

I just took delivery of a Yamaha RXV765 AV receiver today and I think its faulty.
I have a 6.1 speaker setup. When I connect up all the speakers and start the automatic setup process I hear sound from all speakers except the 2 (L/R) surround speakers.
I have confirmed that the speakers are working by swapping over the cables for the front L/R and surround L/R speakers so that the front speakers are now connected to the surround outputs. When I then start the setup process I hear sound from the surround L/R speakers (now connected to the front channels) but not the front L/R speakers (now connected to the surround channels).
Is there anything else I can do to prove its not working?
Is there anything that I could be doing wrong?

Also, I have my SkyHD box connected via HDMI and an Optical cable for the sound (in order to get Dolby Digital). I cannot see a way of setting up the receiver to output sound from the optical cable whilst viewing the HDMI signal on the TV??

you need to do a firmware update to be able to assign the optical/coax audio to the hdmi picture input, it is easy to do, there are instructions on the forum somewhere.

as far as the speakers, are you sure you are connecting them to the surround outputs not the zone 2 outputs?

I just checked and the speakers are definitely connected to the surround outputs and not zone2.

Regarding the firmware, the unit came with an extra slip of paper telling me how to assign audio to video so I assumed that it already had the firmware update installed. Theres no option to change the audio for the HDMI channels though.

Have you got the surround speakers connected to the Surround outputs or the Surround Back outputs on the amplifier?

They are connected to the Surround outputs NOT the Surround Back outputs.
AFAIK the surround back (left) channel is for the third back speaker in the 6.1 setup but I havent got that connected at the moment.
I've even done a manual install and told it the surround speakers are present but theres still no sound from the surround speakers.

The firmware installed is J030 which needs updating to K032 (to fix the Sky sound problem).
I have located the firmware file(s) to do this but theres no point if the unit is faulty so if nobody has any other ideas I will send it back.

it certainly sounds odd, regardless of the settings, when doing the auto setup with the mic connected, you should get something from the rears
i have my sky hdmi direct to the tv and the audio thru the amp even tho i have current firmware,as i cant be arsed to remove my amp and rewire for no real reason.

I have arranged for the 765 to go back to Richer Sounds and I just wanted to say how impressed I have been so far with their customer sevice in this regard.
I sent them an email on Saturday notifying them that the unit is faulty and I got an email back today (Monday) saying that they will send out a replacement and pick up the faulty one at the same time (on Wednesday).
I was expecting to have to send it back and then wait for days to get a replacement.
Well done RS!

I received the replacement RXV765 yesterday and the surround channels are working.
However the Subwoofer does not appear to be working.
When I switch on the amp I hear a 'pop' from the subwoofer and the speaker comes out of standby. So there appears to be some sort of signal coming from the subwoofer channel.
When I play a DVD or a PS3 game theres no output from the subwoofer which goes into standby and never comes out unless I power cycle the amp.
I have tried changing the speaker settings in the amp setup menu (both normal and reverse phase, 80hz crossover, volume specifically for the subwoofer).
Any ideas on what could be wrong here? Have I got another faulty unit?
The subwoofer is a Yamaha SW-P130 which came in a pack with the main speakers.
