I bought my son an ipod in February 2004 ,so it must now be out of warranty.
    It has the following faults:
it won't turn on - the Apple logo appears whilst loading, then it crashes
it won't update when attached to a computer - get an error message
the back button is "dodgy" (his word)
the battery lasts only about 10 minutes

Could anyone out there tell me what might be wrong with it and what would be the cheapest way to get it fixed?
    Many thanks

Tried the reset? battery lasts 10 mins? Man you must have really been agresive with it. Did you drop it? sounds like the HD can't be accessed. Sounds like a lost cause unless by opening it up you see an obvious fixable problem. Which I doubt.

Try Apple's support pages, they're pretty good:

    http://www.apple.com/uk/support/ipod

Follow the Solving Problems link. It could just be something pretty simple like needing a reset, or a restore - these are detailed on the support area.

    Keep us posted.
