    Hi all,
Im looking for a new freeview box.
I currently have the NetGem iPlayer but I find it quite slow at changing channels and the EPG is painful.

Whats the best performing freeview box?

    Cheers

    Hi
I am surprised - I personally find it to be one of the quickest - the EPG is there instantly and the digital text is way the quickest I have used - ref channel changes I find this a problem on most of the boxes I have used - if you go to something else you may be disappointed!
    Regards

I am on my 2nd sagem and the quality aint great but compared to a philips i had between boxes (which went faulty) the sagems are very quick.

They also seem to be quicker then the on/itv digital boxes. My grand father has a deawoo which is also very speedy.

Hmmm... I got my iPlayer a few years ago when it first came out so maybe I have a box with a slower processor.
When I press 0 on the remote for the Whats On guide it takes 3-5 seconds to appear.

I don't understand why digital/cable boxes are always slow, why isn't it instant like Analogue telly?

Thanks Ipod Crazy, I heard the daewoo's were pretty good.

2 reasons that it seems slow compared to analogue (with an analogy) :

    1) The EPG info has to be obtained from the transport stream .

    2) There's a whole lot of software, middleware etc. running in the STB under control the processor(s) - a bit like the wait you usually get between opening a program in Windoze on your PC and everything finally happening.

You can sort of liken this to analogue teletext - which also isn't instant (unless already stored in teletext memory as some TVs do) ; with teletext the information has to be extracted from the VBI and then processed before you get your required page or subpage on screen.
