I've posted this on 2 other MCE forums but haven't got an answer yet so lets try it here. Why cant I fast forward or rewind in my videos, I can skip forward/backwards with the skip buttons but ffwd/rwnd don't do anything apart from bring the bar up at the bottom. live tv forwards ok as does dvd, am i alone with this problem or does everyone else suffer the same problem.

Same here - I think it is just the way it is.
Live/Recorded TV and DVD's work fully,
Other files such as divx/xvid .avi's have limited navigation, I think it is just jump back or forward a minute, there is some tweaking of these buttons available in the settings.

It's a common problem when Using Win DVD, as your DVD decoder, you cannot fast forward/rewind, Live/Recorded TV, try changing your DVD decoder....

Same here - nvidia decoder - I think it is just that avi files (mine are divx/xvid) are not able to ffwd or rewind say 2x. 4x etc... juts skip back and forth a minute or so...

Well Media Center is not the ideal program for navigating media files, you still have to switch back to the mouse and keyboard if you want that much control over your media, use media player 10 if you want to rewind and ffw, and use the mouse to do it....

It won't ffwd or rewind divx/xvid files - not on my system anyway. MCE will skip them back or forward a minute, or whatever I have set the skip button to.

I was using windvd fine for over a year and UI could fast forward and rewind live TV perfectly.
I think you have misunderstood the question he is refering to "My Videos" where most people store divx, WMV etc so the DVD decoder is irellivent.
Yes the ff and rewind buttons doing nothing is normal it is a pain when you need to go to the end of a video file within MCE but thats just a little flaw we all put up with :)

That My Video thing in media center is a Joke, it's just something they threw in as a bonus.. i'd never use it to watch video, to basic, you can tell by the cheap file navigation..stick to media player or another program....

But that defeats the object of laying on the couch watching your big screen tv and navigating all of your media files with a remote control and using a family friendly GUI.....

Pretty huge oversight by microsoft though, a video player that doesnt fastforward or rewind, is there any possibility that this will be fixed in the forthcoming update, when is the update due by the way.

It must be a block because WMV9 you can fast forward the videos so I am not sure if they did onepurpose disabled it because when you do FF mpg or mpg2 it crashes or maybe they just want to wind us up lol :)
But yes they should at least allow FF for mpg and mpeg2 I can understadn them blocking divx because its competition of thiers.

I can't get any of my players to ffwd or rwd divx/xvid files - maybe the codec doesn't allow it?

Yeah I asked this on a few forums myself a while ago but got no answer, in my opinion its a pretty major oversight by MS, perhaps its cos divx/xvid is competition for wmv. Hopefully it will be fixed sometime or someone will come up with a fix.

I dont think thats the reason, after all dvd mpeg2 format isnt owned by microsft and they support that ok, it would seem a bit daft trying to sell a system for "multimedia" that only plays microsofts own type of files. Definately a bug as all my other players ffwd divx with no problems, good old microsoft maybe they will get it right one day.

Out of interest which players do you have that ffwd divx, might check them out - is it 2X, 4X, 8X etc?

True, but guess MS, should of thought about that when Designing it..., maybe they will imrpove it in the next version...., and the fwd/rewind thing does not bother me, it pauses it that's all that matters, why would you want to fast forward/rewind anyway....
