Everyone with Japanese PSP can now use network update to get the first firmware release from sony....basically it updates a few languages and also the ability to resume movie playback from sleep (normally resets)

Not anything mega but hey...its there....
    Its a 13Mb download!

It say's it needs a memory stick.
Will the update only operate when the memory stick is in?

I don't believe this will be the case.

It just needs somewhere to store it so it can install it.

    Downloading mine now.

    Cheers

It downloads the memory stick and then you can choose to install it now or later. Or presumably use that memory stick on someone else's PSP with no network connection.

this website checks for updates and provides a direct download link from the Sony update site.

    Put it in the
PSP\Games\UPDATE folder....then you can just run it whenever you want.

Is this and official update, just want to make sure as I heard about the last PSP update that was released on the net and it damaged your PSP.

Also, after I have downloaded the file, do I just create the new folder and move the file across manually is there an automatic function?

Your PSP won't pickup a non official update. So the one got through that is official.

I haven't download the one above, but assume it is just linking to the official Sony one.

When I saw the update listed on the Official Sony PSP website I decided it was ok so installed it and everything seems to be working fine.

One thing I noticed that I thought was a good idea is that it wont allow you to install the firmware update unless you have the PSP charging, they want to make sure you have enough power to complete the update otherwise if the PSP shutdown half way through it would be dead.

the page i posted is basically a web-based checker for updates, the link provided is the same one used by the PSP directly....i have used the file downloaded from that link personally on my PSP and it worked perfectly...i wouldn't post something i didn't already use.

Me too, takes about 2/3 mins to install then it restarts. The only way I can tell it has updated is to look in System Settings where it states v1.5

Its pretty straight forward, just hook up your PSP, activate the USB connection and create a folder called UPDATE in the Game directory so it looks like this...PSP\Games\UPDATE

Then just transfer the file into the new directory, hook up the AC charger, select the Memory Card under the Game section and start the update.

Got my Jap PSP today and did the update after it picked up my router straight away  . Why can't all technology be like the PSP, it's just so user friendly!

My download was also very quick and online gaming should work a treat!

the directions to do this are very simple and yet i cannot get it to work!

    (i'm doing it via usb)

tried re-downloading the file and putting it in these places-

    e/psp/games/update
e/psp/games - when in here it comes up as corrupted data.....
    e/psp/savedata/games/update
    e/psp/savedata/games
    e/psp/savedata/update
    e/games/update
    e/games

    i think that's all variables i tried

battery is charged and ac powered

    any ideas?

Have you formatted the memory stick? you must do this on the PSP 1st, do not have the PSP connected to your PC and do not use the PC to format the stick.

Once this is done, put it in the 1st folder you mention, you may need to create the folder inside the psp/games directory. USE CAPITAL LETTERS to name the folder.

Then disconnect from your PC, plug into the mains and then select the memory stick via the game option and click to start the update. Your PSP will reboot and you can then go into the System settings, and select System info and it should tell you that you are now using version 1.50.

Hope this helps, but make sure you format the memory stick using your PSP 1st
